  1. Same here - I've also hit the mid 50s a couple of times on motorway runs, just setting the cruise control to about 65 seems to be a sweet spot between not feeling like I'm going too slow and getting a decent MPG.

However, it is quite boring.....nice to know it *can* do it though.

  2. Did my first real run in the car (Petrol VRS DSG) over the last couple of days, a 390mile round trip from home to Keswick.

Wasn't in a huge rush, and it was mostly very quiet motorway, so I just set the cruise control to 72mph, took it easy, and enjoyed the Lake District.

Was amazed to get 51.5mpg (according to the car) on the run, which is almost what I was getting out of my 19 plate 1.5 petrol (manual) when I drove it sensibly.

The drive home I played around a little more, had it in sport mode from time to time, and was a little more spirited, but still returned 45.2mpg

Am taking these numbers with a pinch of salt as it's what the car said, but am interested in what others are getting in terms of MPG and if this stacks up with others' experiences?

  3. I've just gone from Canton in a 19 plate Octavia, to standard audio in a 21 VRS (petrol), so just adding a thought or two.

I swapped cars over this week, and am prefacing this in the knowledge that a car is never the place for perfect audio, whatever you have

Canton in the '19 plate Octavia was pretty good, really quite nice with acoustic recordings and with the sound set to the front of the cabin.
It was noticeably less good with more complex stuff.  It *did* however go loud and have lots of bass if that's your thing (not mine).

Didn't spec it on the new VRS, and was expecting a huge difference in quality, but at sensible volume levels it's not as big a step down as I expected.

It's definitely not as detailed in comparison, and if you want huge bass you will be very disappointed; but it is more than acceptable, certainly loud enough, and a massive leap from standard audio in the previous couple of Octavias (14 & 17 plates) I owned.

  4. A couple of weeks ago (last week of Nov), I ordered a

Meteor Grey Hatch, Petrol, DSG w. spare to arrive in March (at the end of my current PCH) - was given a build week that said it would be delivered at end of Feb, but got a call saying it had been brought forward and should be here January.

Am likely to hang on until March to pick it up, but let's see...

  5. I was in a similar situation to you (1.6 D elegance) and could see that there was no way there was going to be any money at the end of the deal, so couldn't see why I would pay extra £ just to get to the end of the term.

I spoke to the dealer and worked out the earliest date I could hand back with no penalty and worked around that - just handed the car back, paid a little for excess miles and no trouble at all, very simple transaction.

Ended up going from PCP to PCH and saving c. £70-80 per month, would never go to PCP again - very happy to rent the family car, no desire to own it!

Car was collected this morning.  Nothing untoward with the condition report but was advised that this is not the final report and that vw do the final inspection.

Can i cancel my direct debit now?

I've just gone through this process, and there was no VW inspection involved.  BCA took a couple of weeks to collect the car so it was picked up from the dealership without me being there. I rang BCA the day after the scheduled collection to ask if everything was OK with condition etc., and once they said it was I got straight on the phone to VWFS to cancel my direct debit...the payment was already in their system to be collected from my bank 7 days later.

VWFS put me on hold to call BCA and check things, and 2 minutes later confirmed everything was OK and that they would cancel the direct debit from their system and my commitment to the car was over.

I am expecting an invoice for c. £100 for excess mileage and was told that would come in the next 'few weeks'.....all very simple for me, seemed to go really smoothly.

Definitely worth calling VWFS I reckon.

You haven't mentioned any difference in performance

Decided not to drive it too hard with only 9 miles on the clock! but honestly it felt pretty similar in low revs and driving sensibly - the little bit of dual carriageway I did you could feel that it had much more to give than the old car though....overtaking will definitely be an easier process I think.

I could have been happy with another diesel (although the lack of 6th gear on my 1.6 could be annoying at times), but my use/long range driving is slightly different for the next couple of years with fewer trips to London, so it had to be petrol this time around really.

  8. Moved from 14 plate 1.6 Elegance (37K, owned from new) to a new 17 plate 1.4 SE Sport today - thought it might be helpful to post a few initial thoughts.

    Old

2014 Elegance 1.6, LED rear lights, spare wheel, race blue…much loved, 37K miles of absolutely stress free motoring (apart from a memorable hour or so driving round Paris)

    New

2017 1.4 SE Sport, 18” Golus, sports suspension, smartlink, sunset glass, spare wheel, race blue.

New car was at the dock in January when I reserved it, and the only one with smartlink, spare wheel and sunset glass (which I wanted), but I wasn’t bothered about the wheels or suspension but they didn’t put me off.

Had to wait until today to pick up to make it work financially with the PCP with no extra to pay.

    Differences......

    Amundsen

so much quicker and easier to use, plus higher definition – wasn’t quite expecting to see so much change.  The old sat nav was the main reason I went for smartlink.

Like the way you can access albums by swiping left and right. Everything feels *much* snappier though.

    Quieter

the 1.4 is barely audible compared to the diesel in my old car. Got quite used to the engine noise, and my wife has a GT86 so this new car sounds disconcertingly quiet.

Twice on the drive home I thought the start stop had kicked in at junctions when it was still running.

    18" wheels and the ride

I was really concerned about this with the 18” wheels and sports suspension – this is the family car after all (wife’s car for mid life crisis moments).

I had read some reports on here and elsewhere about the 18” wheels and sports suspension that were concerning enough for me to worry about it for the last month or so.

However, it barely feels any different at all…honestly it is all no fuss and feels very, very similar. Wheels look nice though.

    Seats

I liked the Alcantara in the Elegance, but these feel pretty good – certainly supportive and the lumbar support feels to have a little more range too.

    Odd things

Auto dimming rear view mirror is much sleeker design

Glove box door is definitely not as sturdy (feels real flimsy)

Speakers / sound is a little better

The blanking plate for the headlight height adjustment wheel looks terrible

Only one hook in the boot (never used the two together in the Elegance, but still feel mildly cheated).

Am expecting 10-15mpg less, but the sums worked out pretty even as I will be under 10k miles a year.

Other than that it feels very much like business as usual but with updated tech and for much less £s per month!

  10. Just handed in my MK3 Elegance from PCP and picked up a new SE Sport with a few extra toys - all feels very familiar (except the super speedy higher-def sat nav - which is a relief!)

One question, on locking the car there's no audible confirmation (other than the central locking itself), have been through the setup menus but cannot find this anywhere...has the central locking beep confirmation gone from more recent models? If so, I'll miss it!

  11. Handing mine back today (about 6 months early on the PCP), I'd got to the point where I could hand it back with no penalty.

I'd assumed that there was going to be no cash for me at the end of the PCP, plus in May it would have needed a large service AND the 2 rear tyres are getting there (lasted 37k though), so it just made sense to let it go.

Certainly realised that I don't need PCP as I *always* hand the cars back so in effect rent them, so the lower monthly payments on PCH make much more sense.

So, picking up a 1.4 SE Sport (with a few extras) for £60 a month less than my current PCP on a 1.6 Elegance, the absolute clincher for me was that 2 years seems to be the time I start thinking about changing cars/getting bored, so a 2yr contract suits me much better.

  12. Good experience for us. My wife got bored of her CitiGo and wanted a Toyota GT86 - our local dealer wasn't interested in a discussion about price, and we gave CarWow a go.

7 or 8 dealers came in, with an surprising range of prices (£2.5K between best and worst) - in the end we saved £3k+ on list, and the dealer was excellent - once contact was made we worked directly with them to get the deal we wanted; plus £20 Amazon from CarWow at the end for completing the deal was a nice surprise too.

Would certainly do it again, if only to give some ammunition when talking to my local dealer when it comes time to change my Octavia

  13. Interesting to read this thread, we had our Citigo Elegance 75 for 18 months from new as my wife's car, and made 500 miles on a tank a few times when on long runs. Citigo went 1st Sept for a Toyota GT86, so fuel economy not the main focus! Still have my Octavia though, and likely will replace with similar next year.....

  14. I've found the USB port to be inconsistent at charging the phone, either with official cables or an Amazon basics lightning cable.

Have resorted to just using a car USB charger in the 12v socket for consistent charging.

Much better than the chaotic on and off sound I was getting using the in car USB. Shame as it was a really neat answer to charging the phone in the car....

  15. Could have been one of the colours you can get on the Czech website (perhaps 'orange fun') they have at least 20 colours in their configurator that we don't have access to.

  16. I questioned the effectiveness of the cornering fog light function on my Octavia vRS as the fog lights were small and very low to the ground.

When in for service I was given a Yeti to drive, the cornering fogs were brilliant, a marked improvement over what I was used to.

I think where you live and the roads you drive on effect peoples perception of their usefulness. I spend quite some time performing slower manoeuvres on dark unlit rural roads with high hedges. In this environment I've found that they are great.

Closer to home in urbanville, they are hardly noticeable.

Seconded here - never thought they were any use on my Superb, but on the Yeti that followed it (pre FL) they were excellent and genuinely useful especially on unlit roads

Now moved to Octavia Elegance, and they're not activated as standard on Elegance spec but given where they are on the car I just don't see the point.

  17. Had a similar problem conundrum with my Yeti Elegance (but have also had a Superb SE and the Bolero was the same, so hopefully this will work for you), this was the solution  for iPhone 5 anyway.....

For me the difference was about *when* I switched Bluetooth on - if I had it turned on when I started the car it would allocate and use the BT-Audio channel which meant constantly changing back to radio after google maps had given me directions.

If I switched the ignition on, did all the setting up the route in the car and THEN switched bluetooth on and 'Connect Phone' using the MFSW then all the directions came on as a phone call rather than BT-Audio.

So I could listen to the radio/SD card, directions would be treated as a call so would mute the radio, the directions came out of the speakers, the 'call' (directions) ends and the radio would be unmuted.

I've just exchanged the Yeti for an Octavia Elegance so can't go and replicate this - while the new car has sat nav, the phone handling is much slower than the set up in the Superb or Yeti...will take a little getting used to I think.
