  1. According to VW's official explanation, the problem with the seven-speed DSG gearboxes was due to sulfur in the gearbox's transmission fluid and iodine-based inorganic head stabilizers in its plastic components damaging its metal parts, leading to corrosion of internal electronics. This corrosion, which may be further worsened by humid climate conditions, ultimately caused some gearboxes' electronic control units to malfunction and short circuit. The manufacturer will replace the electronic components in the gearboxes of recalled vehicles, as well upgrade the gearbox's software, thereby resolving the issue.

  2. Just wondering all, what "gestures of goodwill" have you managed to get out of Skoda for all this hassle? I'm trying to work out what to do (Going to get some legal advice tomorrow) but wondering what the 'best' anyone has managed to compensate them for all this?

I'm thinking that a warranty extension and service plan extension seems at the very least reasonable, and something that they have a huge mark up on. Thoughts?

I got 3 free service and a year warranty extended .

  3. 2. There seems to be a small clunk coming from somewhere when first getting under way (under 20km and maybe 2nd gear). It doesn't happen after you stop at lights, only when first moving after switching on the ignition. Could it be something like ABS or another system "sorting itself out" for want of a better description?

    supercharger Magnetic clutch engaged ?

  4. Interesting... I suppose the point is though - why tell the driver? What use is that information?

Interesting - thanks for that. What is your basis for saying don't put it into N while rolling? Is it because it's a bad thing to do technically for the auto box - or because it's bad as a driver (I know technically you're not supposed to coast)?

    Danger, burn more fuel.

  6. Ok, another thread on tyres.

I have recently changed the conti sport contact 2 originally fitted to the vRS for Michelin pilot sport 3's. The tyres have more grip than the Conti's and are far better in the wet. And that annoying pull to the left seems to have cured itself which was there from new (and i didn't have the tracking done).

But I have noticed my fuel consumption has dropped by some 2 or 3 mpg. Now this could be associated with the change point from Summer to Winter gasoline with the fuel being a little more volatile and thus having a lower energy density, but wondered what others may have found/noticed when they changed their tyres?

Also, I got my tyres through Black Circles, only to find out later from the garage that fitted mine would have done them for about £13 a corner cheaper, doh. Just thought I would through that little gem in if others are looking for replacements. Next time I will use BC to get a base price then contact the garage direct for a price.

I also changed the conti sport contact 2 to pilot sport 3 and noticed the same, especially in wet.

  7. Rubbish.

Speak to Phil at Skoda UK Customer Care. He's sorting my case out and has been fantastic.

I managed to use 8 Litres between my service just under 10k miles and my current 15k mileage.

Local Skoda dealer has done an oil consumption test and agreed oil usage is too high. New piston rings have been ordered (as have other parts that might go in based on the initial inspection) and we will go from there.

If my oil usage doesn't go down after that work is done they will get 1 last repair chance and then the car will be rejected.

My car is going to have the modified oil breather system tomorrow.

  8. OK, Fabia is in the dealers, I spoke about the breather system and I also mentioned the thoughts on the issue not being due to rings!

The reply I got was this, "Skoda UK have a procedure for this issue, it starts with an oil change, the replacement oil is weighed in to the engine, then a 240 km drive is under taken (probably at my expense as the car has a full tank of petrol!) Any way, after the journey the oil is dropped again and weighed, if the weight is below what VAG state then the rings will be replaced, if after that oil consumption is still high the engine will be replaced.

I have also spoken with the sales side of the dealership and if I am not happy at any time they will do there best to swap me into a new car or similar age similar mileage for a similar price.

I will go along with the procedure VAG have and we will see how things go, the service manager told me from all the cars they have sold only one has had rings replaced and it was a success.

I will keep you informed of what happens this week. On the whole service is very good and I am happy'ish so far.
