I would also check the alternator pulley one way clutch for wear and tear.

I have done 15,000 miles in my 1.4tsi 2009 twin door with no problems, I have never had to add any additional engine oil. It has rattled (timing chain or tappets) from new for the first two seconds after starting. There have been reports of early poor quality timing chains stretching and tensioner problems in the past, but I am not certain if it applied to this code of engine or another similar 1.4L VW engine produced around the same time.

When my VW EA189 2L engine car had it's last MOT it could have failed because their machine could not find any particulate/smoke emissions. The garage said no emissions implied to MOT HO that their machine was faulty and therefore they would have to fail my car. However, to help out, the tester blew his cigarette smoke at the exhaust probe and therefore my VW passed the test.
Moral, you need smoke to pass the MOT!

I use a fine jet of compressed air.

Haynes manual on the CR Passat say that you have to put the lock carrier (the whole front of the car, bumper removed ) in the 'Service position' which will give you 10cm approximately of extra working room.

Yes it still does rev. to 1,250RPM on 50% of the first of the day start ups, I think it might be something it does to get the CAT to light up/warm up quicker.
-
From new, my 1.4TSI on first start of the day will tickover at 800 or 1,250 RPM for about 30 seconds no matter what the outside temperature. Also the noise it makes for the first 5 seconds sounds like timing chain rattle.

It was my fault as I had the back of the car full of firewood.

One stud per side of the car, there is another self tapper fastner per side which I think is the same type of fixing that hold the front plastic wheel arch liner on , sorry I did this job about two years ago and my memory does not last that long! I think the front of the protector overlaps (male/female) with the rear of the main large plastic undershield. I kept one of the broken parts in my garage, I will have a look for it tomorrow afternoon to see if it will jog my memory.

I broke both of mine on a Waitrose sleeping policeman. Easy to get spare parts and I replaced them without having to lift the car. There is a welded to chassis fixing stud (about 4BA dia.size) with a plastic nut each side which is highly likely to have been bent, I just bent mine straight again.

For more enlightened information re. CR oil pump drive problems google 'KMB parts direct' (I have no connection with them). Read smaller print paragraph titled 'Please be aware' etc.
-
There has been some talk of oil pump driveshaft failures (rounding off) on the 140/170 CR engines like the 140CR CBA engine fitted to my VW EOS. Later engines seem to be fitted with a larger dia. oil pump driveshalf.

Correction, where I said power steering belt I ment to say alternator/ac belt
-
Does it smell of diesel? Is the bottom or lid of the fuel filter wet? Don't let diesel get onto your power steering belt, I have read that a perished/ broken power steering belt can jam into the cam belt with all the damage that implies.
-
Diesel leak from the filter or it's pipes?

My S spec. headlights have a lever inside the headlight unit, a bit fiddly to do so don't try to do it in the dark.

As far as I know there is no recommended date/mileage to change the timing chain, in my mind it should last the life of the car, and my main dealer knows of no advisory or recall. I wish they had designed it with a belt or a double row chain. I would replace the chain and tensioner when it got too loud for me to tolerate. A loose chain could skip a tooth and also break the tensioner, but we don't know if this is your problem, it could be something else.
-
Timing chains can make a very loud rattle.
The higher power output versions of our 1.4TSI engine have a reputation for timing chain stretching, timing chain tensioner problems and piston breakage.
Do a Internet search for 'VW CAXC engine', you will find plenty of information.
-
Timing chain might have stretched.

Chain, with rattle on start up.

In my Suberb and Eos I have always found that the brake and clutch pedals when at rest are uncomfortably high, I have to lift my heel off the floor to reach them, not a very safe feature. As yet I have not found a remedy.

I HAD to buy a 32mm socket for my 140CR VW EOS oil filter as the main dealer grease monkey did the filter cap up so tight that my tube socket would not undo it anymore. The torque for the filter cap is molded into the cap upper surface, 18lbf ft. I have fitted a magnetic sump plug, 22lbf ft.

My 1.4L has both front brake air ducks blanked off with (removable) plastic covers.

My, from new, 1.4 CAXC 2009, 14K miles is running as well as it's first day. A little rattley on starting up (sales staff said they all do it) and has a undignified rasp on the overrun. I have asked my main dealer, Crawley Down, twice if there has been any recalls especially with reguard to the timing chain and tensioner. They say there are no recalls for my car/ engine.

Did the replacement alternator come with a new one way pulley or was the old one used.
