  1. It's a bit of a waste of money if you're going to get it remapped though. They're not guaranteed to work either, it still might come on depending on how fussy your car is. Cheaper to get your own basic diagnostic cable so that you can just reset it easily once you're sure it's just the sensor
  2. you have the decat in now though don't you? If it hasn't been mapped out that will put on the EML. So hopefully nothing to worry about!
  3. Do your homework looking through this forum and don't try to save money too much on the initial buy. It's getting difficult to find good ones because somebody that has looked after and loved their vRS will not want to sell it because they realise that they are not going to get the money it is worth to them. If you get a good one, they are as cheap to run as any petrol car. (Mine is better on fuel than my old 1.3 Mazda) If the price looks to good to be true, 99% of the time it is. Ideally buy one from an enthusiast, regular servicing is a must on these. look for decent or at least matched tyres etc, this type of thing just shows that they weren't a scab when it came to the upkeep of their car (same as when looking for any car but I think its extra important with these). There's quite a few for sale on here with good history and recent servicing.
  4. Ha, that's even harsher than Clive! I can't believe you've been so unlucky with it but these do need looked after their whole lives and their past servicing and treatment is so important. You can rag the **** out of them as long as you treat them well (if that makes any sense)..... But onto the bets.... I'm gonna guess the diff will give up after you have it remapped
  5. Woah, they really are going cheap these days. It is worth that all day long in Ireland but our government likes to take its cut and I just looked it up. The vehicle registration tax to import your car to here is just over €1000. I genuinely think that must be having a negative impact on this part of the second hand market in the UK. Look on the bright side, you're somehow getting a free Rav-4.
  6. I wouldn't be going to them for a remap then...... Most remappers will claim a gain in MPG but realistically it's negligible. You will accelerate that little bit harder having a remap and I have noticed that on the computer it does show up at sub 10 instantaneous mpg a little more since I've had it remapped but overall I noticed no difference and can still get up to 45mpg on a good run driving like a nun.
  7. Glad you got it sorted and hopefully you can get it remapped soon.
  8. that looks instantly better. So, it is just from an everyday normal 5 door MK4 golf yeah?
  9. it is meant to close off the crankcase vent slightly whenever you have a large vacuum on th intake side of the turbo. If you block of the TIP and vent the case to atmosphere I don't think the car would like the metered air that would get lost through it but you might get away with it.
  10. While googling for things with stripes I stumbled across this..... Even though it doesn't have stripes I felt an overwhelming need to share it!
  11. You can hear the turbo a little bit more from behind, maybe a slightly more aggressive rumble and I noticed quite a change in the pickup. My car is happier at lower revs uphills with the decat.
  12. I have the rainsport 3s allround and to be honest, take what people say with a little pinch of salt. They're bloody good for the price and much better than anything for the same price (mine were €84 (£69) each fitted) but they are not quite up to the performance of some others. if you are on a slight budget though they are a brilliant mix of performance and value and exceptional in standing water. To me they lack a little bit on all out grip in the corners.
  13. oh, just a note on the starter. It's a common fault too but just make sure the replacement is a starter from an 02j gearbox and not from another AUQ engine as most of the other AUQs are 6 speed. I made that mistake and ended up getting one from a AUQ Golf and it wouldn't fit.
  14. ha, all that's left to replace now are micro switches in the doors and window mechanisms and you'll have changed everything breakable A lift is something I've always wanted and at this stage it would have paid for itself with all the family cars.
  15. I would think it is optimistic just to make the car look more efficient to people who aren't going to bother calculating it. Just regarding the brim to brim... It is not without its flaws. As with any similar experimental procedure there are going to be errors introduced if a different pump is used e.g. higher pumping rate will cause it to cut out earlier by design of the mechanism and difference in the rate at which the petrol flows down the tube and settles in the tank. So, if you're trying to be very accurate, it will have to be carried out multiple times and averaged. Then you've got temperature-volume variations.... Ha, I'm only messing at this stage. Realistically though they should give a reasonably similar answer (neither of which will be correct).
  16. yeah, just out of curiosity (as I've never strangled a cat before), I wanted to know what the other way sounded like. So I changed it around a few months ago. Even though it seems to fit neater into the pipework, I couldn't live with the noise it made so changed it back right away. It sounded to me as if it wasn't letting as much air past (higher pitched noise = more restriction??) and the sound seemed to last a fraction of a second longer at each gear change..... but that could be all in my head. On another note, you don't waste much time till you get stuff done to the car, seems to be coming along very quickly!
  17. You need a ko3s, the ko3 is older but afaik the housing is identical. Before you get a new turbo, it's worth trying one of those stop oil leak additives. The millers one worked great on my old car.
  18. ha, love that! suppose it wasn't much good to him anymore
  19. That could be it so, mine used to smoke when I had 0w-30 oil in it and no cat but I couldn't see any when the cat was in. I run it on 5w-40 now and haven't noticed any since and not using much either. It was quite smokey really (embarrassing to sit at traffic lights at times and stinking!) but that is a year and 20k miles ago so I put it down to her not liking the oil or maybe it just had a blocked crankcase vent valve that started working again. I'm pretty sure mine was not valve stem seals as it never smoked before around 5 minutes from cold.
  20. What level is the dipstick reading? I keep mine 2/3rd of the way up the hatched area on it and it's fine. I assume you checked but just incase the light came on and you bunged in a litre and have overfilled it?
  21. mine burns a little oil with decat pipe but not when the catalytic converter is in. I reckon it must be to do with the reduced backpressure. I'd make sure to replace the oil pickup pipe in the sump too if it hasn't been done recently. It has been known to clog up and cause the oil pressure to drop, killing turbos.
  22. I like it! The sills are a little bit over the top. It's quite tastefully modified, front end looks a bit like a Lupo.
  23. Ok, first things for power would be a 3 inch downpipe, preferably decat (The standard ones are very restrictive and you'd be lucky if you'd get a true 200bhp with one fitted. The rest of the exhaust should not be restrictive on standard turbo) Front mount intercooler is needed to keep temp down at stage 2, a lot of people are using toyosports ones. Turbo intake pipe, the standard can collapse if pushed and is very small at the turbo side. You realistically might be able to get a car as quick as your E30. Around 230 bhp is doable with the above. Torque can be incredible from these engines even compared to a 2.8. You should see over 350NM easily enough.
  24. Oh right, sorry. No idea what's been done to your car already. Might be able to get your hands on Lloyds KW coilovers if he's still changing them.
