  1. Great thread. My 58-plate Skoda Octavia vRS bought used last year has very noisy tyres. Mine seems to have Dunlop Sport Maxx rear and Dunlop Sport Maxx TT fronts. Is this what it came with from the factory? The car has 18" wheels with 225/40 18 tyre size.

I've never had a car with a 40 profile tyre before but I'm guessing the very loud tyre noise is thanks to this. Can I simply choose a 45 profile next time.? My fathers VW Eos has 235/40 ZR18 and they look fatter. He has Continentals that appear to have a protective bulge lip around the rim. Can I fit 235 section tyres to my alloys? I'm told the sidewall profile is just a percentage of the width ie. 40% of 225mm on my car.

Whatever size I choose I'll go with a different brand of tyre. I've always liked Uniroyal tyres especially as its always raining here in the UK.

  2. I thought changing everything to L&K spec piano black would be easy but I should have known it would be a Skoda/dealer nightmare.

I have a 58-plate pre-FL car which has the horrid plastic looking silver trim everywhere, doors, dash etc. It wouldn't be so bad if VW Group had allowed Skoda to use the real alloy look from VW/Audi interiors but no such luck.

L&K spec (Laurent & Klement) Octavia models have lovely piano black interior trim which looks 100% better and more modern in my opinion and some of the cars on Briskoda have been upgraded.

My (unhelpful) local Skoda dealer helped me source and buy the correct dash parts only to find the centre radio/climatronic surround only comes in silver or grey plastic not piano black, the door trims are not separate and I have to buy each door interior at £254.88 each!!!), the ashtray is available but only in grey, silver or carbon???

Thankfully the small pieces either side of the driver binnacle come in piano black and pull/push off/on easy enough (£17.45 and £10.65). The big strip above the glovebox is available in piano black (£27) but is apparently dealer fit only and the piece running around the gear stick is available in piano black (£6) and takes 5 seconds to fit without removing gear knob or gaitor. Incidentally my leather gaitor is ripped so I enquired to the cost of a new one and they cost £75 each!!!

I bought the centre radio surround (Skoda dealer price £5.65 ...nice surprise, silver is £32.29) and had a local bodyshop paint it piano black for £20 - the finish was appalling and looked like a 2-year old had painted it. They apologised and painted it red which was better and glossy but not great either. I have since bought another one which had been sent to be carbon wrapped by Wicked Coatings in Poole, Dorset for £55.

In the meantime the three dash parts arrived at the dealer from Czechoslovakia (all where out of stock both in UK and Czech Republic but all once ordered all appeared within 5-days???). As I reported the left and right pieces either side of the dash remove easily with a bit of force although beware of the headlight switch. When I pulled on the trim piece the switch surround with all the light settings on it flew off and broke - but somehow it snapped back into place with the new trim even though a tab was broken inside. Remove this part and switch first.

The passenger trim piece looked easy too until I realised it's bolted on with three screws accessed from behind and below. Thank God I had a Skoda schematic diagram or I would have ripped the lot off and probably caused expensive damage. Perhaps dealer is right and I should let them fit it. They said airbag has to be deactivated, glovebox lid removed, along with air-con ducting, thermo switch, cubby light and wiring all have to be removed. (Damn!)

So far my interior looks like a patchwork quilt.

Do I dare try and prize the door trims off??? Wish I hadn't started this now interior project now :wall::@

  3. Hi all

Thought I'd share, just tinted my headlights and part of the taillights with Foliatec smoke tint spray. Not the easiest stuff to work with but a chose a warm, sunny non windy day and left the lights on the car - lazy I know. I spent most of the task taping newspaper around the lights with masking tape to protect from overspray (their was lots of overspray).

I'm pleased with the overall result. Just a shame Skoda didn't think to tint or fit black inner headlight parts to begin with on the vRS model back in 2008. I was going to change the rear lights to the FL model versions as the vRS already has the mandatory MOT pass reflectors in the rear bumper but I may stay with my tinted versions for a now.

    Here's some pictures.

  4. Nick where did you have your interior parts painted? My local spray shop tried to paint the basic black Columbus radio surround (from a Scout £5.52 from Skoda dealer) for my vRS and made a right mess. They had used automotive car paint and it was so bad they didn't charge me. Yours looks factory.

    I have them on mine.

  5. Just found a company that specialise in custom interior parts. I'm going to send them my centre console surround to be made into gloss carbon finish. Check out www.wickedcoatings.co.uk

Incidentally the central surround of my Octavia vRS is £30.00 in silver from my local Skoda dealer or £5.00 in black (from the base spec cars). I've already had the existing silver one painted by a local firm although I'm not happy with the finish. They used automotive exterior paint. Looks ok but close up it's slightly rough to touch even though it's gloss finish.

I would put up a pic but you need a URL ??? Why can't i just upload from My Pictures.

  6. It's a Chinese domestic market Skoda Octavia they are high spec with lots of chrome and LED lighting that the European market Octavia didn't get.

Most people covet the LED rear light clusters which are not available in Europe.

My local Skoda dealer parts manager looked at me like I was crazy when I enquired - lol.

You would need to contact a chinese Skoda retailer such as Haimen Jintian Ke Da Automobile Skoda Co. Ltd. http://dealer.skoda.com.cn/hmjt/ and ask about prices and whether they would use a couirer to send the goods to the UK.

I've been trying to find an email address for them but all I have is an address and phone number.

    Haimen Jintian Ke Da

    Automobile Co. Ltd. Skoda

    1720 West Renmin Road

    Haimen

    Jiangsu

    CHINA

    Tel: 0513-82336622

Haimen is a city in the southeast of Jiangsu province of Eastern China with a population of approximately 1 million. It is located at the opposite side of the Yangtze River to Shanghai. The Chonghai Bridge links the city to Chongming County.

I haven't had the balls to call them yet as I imagine they won't speak English ... email would preferable and I could use Google translate???

  7. Was it lop sided fitting of the dash pod clocks that was mentioned before, or the complete dash board having different gaps left and right of the steering column? Not sure this is the same complaint/comment of the OP here. Had a quick search, but can't find the relevant thread.

    Mike

Thanks Mike, no it's just lop sided in relation to the design of the dash pod clocks when the wheel is dead ahead.

Very strange, all the cars I've had all had level instruments.

  8. Hi all

As you can see I'm new to Skoda ownership and loving my Octavia II (MY2008) vRS.

However, something is bugging me about the dashboard notably the instrument housing.

To my eyes it seems the instrument housing (or cluster) containing the speedo, rev counter etc is canted to the left slightly.

If I put the wheel straight the housing above is definately 5 degrees to the left so the clocks are not level?

Could somebody confirm this is normal and that I'm not going nuts! or worse have a wonky dash...

    Cheers

  9. Skoda recommend Shell Helix on all promotional stuff and in my handbook, however local Skoda main dealer recommended that I use only;

    Quantum Longlife III 5w30 5 ltrs @ £42.00 Part No. ZGB115QLB00501

Not sure who Quantum are in the oil world, but no different I guess from Vokswagen Longlife III oil or even Halfords oil - all supplied in different cartons by a big oil company (probably Castrol, BP, Shell or Mobil) ...

If you use the correct recommended manufacturers oil then they can't say nowt in the event of a warranty/insurance claim.

  10. I recently had the dreaded constant reboot problem with my Columbus, the one where the software fails to load properly and just goes into an endless cycle of re-booting. Most commentators on this site will say that points to a duff HDD and they might be right. However, I've got it working again, at least for now.

My Columbus is a 2009 H11 unit, originally with 1164 firmware and V3 (I think) maps. I first upgraded to V8 maps, but couldn't, of course, get 7-digit postcode functionality. Baffled and dismayed by the reams of conflicting advice about upgrading the firmware in steps, I decided simply to take the plunge and upgrade to 4024 with a disc I acquired from... somewhere.

Lesson 1: by all means fear the worst, but don't re-mortgage your house to get a new Columbus until you have tried a few options.

Lesson 2: seek and ye shall find.

Your post has given me some hope. My Columbus is refusing to play CD's and DVD's as well as playing the one and only HDD track the previous owner must of uploaded ... McFly of all bands

My car is out of warranty and I'm at a bit of a loss as what to do ... do I find a Skoda specialist (mechanical engine repairs maybe but audio repair?), do I take to my local Skoda dealer for help or can I some how re-boot the system (rather than just switch it off)?

I'd like to try something first. Do you need to remove the unit to perform a firmware update or can i plug in via the AUX port in the armrest?

Any advice or pointers would me most welcome. Thanks

  11. Had a similar problem with mine a couple of weeks ago. Passenger side was blowing out v hot air regardless of the temperature or auto setting. Worked OK after parking up for a bit and restarting.

Thanks Pete, I'm guessing yours being a DSG is the facelift Octavia II model, I imagine the basic climatronic and ventilation system is the same. I'll have to get mine checked out I think, no amount of re-setting, turning off or changing through the temp control cycle seems to help. It all sounds motorised inside, I can hear all kinds of ventilation sounds and vacuum noises on start up?

  12. Thanks Sarge, does sound like we have/had similar faults with climatronic.

I'll bite the bullet and take it to my local dealer for diagnosis or should I use my local VW/Audi specialist (Skoda?), I'm guessing the Octavia is basically a Golf/Passat/A3/A4 clone with different sheet metal and interior?

Thanks for the help on this

    CK

  13. Hi all

I'm panicking a little ... The Columbus audio/satnav unit in my Octavia vRS (2008) is happy to accept a CD, recognise it's there, attempt to play it but then crackles through the speakers and dies after the first few bars of the song followed by a CD/DVD ERROR message?

I've tried multiple CD's in case it was a dodgy damaged CD but it's doing it to all CD's.

I love my music on CD ... so gutted! Only had the car two days.

Also it seems very keen to play from the HDD when selecting Media function. Too keen.

The previous owner had uploaded several McFly tracks which I've managed to delete bar one track which the system is refusing to allow me to delete, followed by a CANNOT DELETE ACTIVE AUDIO TRACK message.

I'm panicking because the car is no longer under warranty and I'm aware that the Columbus unit is quite expensive to replace (£1k and nobody will give me the part number). I'm really hoping its a software issue and not a mechanical issue.

I've reset back to factory settings in the hope that it would reboot the unit but I don't think it does.

    Any guidance much appreciated.

P.S. How could Skoda NOT fit steering wheel controls to a vRS model with such a nice audio unit and nice steering wheel. Bit naughty IMO.

  14. I had the same problem with mine. It was the temperature control flap which I remedied by pressing the below buttons on the control panel.

I'm unable to provide you with a link at the moment, but if you do a search I'm sure you'll find it.

With the ignition on but the engine NOT running, hold down the ECON and the bottom left of the four oblong buttons for airflow. The display changes and then you hear all the flaps calibrating.

Basically, pressing the two buttons causes the flap to cycle through its full range of movement as they can sometimes become jammed. When it does this, you'll hear a clicking noise from behind the vents.

    Hope this helps.

My 2008 model vRS is currently boiling me alive on the drivers side when set to LO and air-conditioning the passenger??? I've reset the system as per instructions above so hoping it will fix the issue.

This problem is bearable now (December) but I'm dreading summer already. I'll be roasted.

Never had a car with seperate heater for driver and passenger. Is this normal or an Octavia quirk?
