the truth about electric cars
Many of these events where people have been killed by fatigue were quite possibly by lesser employers than you have who instead apply the opposite pressure on their staff to meet deadlines etc, how do you square that situation? I know a person who has to stop at every motorway services for a break, otherwise on lesser roads, stops every hour for a break, but what he doesn't do is to is pretend that he is doing the right thing and keep on about it, he is just doing what he feels is right for him.

the truth about electric cars
There you go again, basing everything on your experience, so everyone should be following your example? What if you left Kidderminster at 9.00am and got home at 4.00pm, is that OK then to eat at that time? Surely you don't go to bed so early, do you? I'm glad and pleased that practise what you feel is right for you, and that is precisely what is the correct thing to do as only you know how you feel hunger wise and tiredness wise and comfort break wise. Some people do other despicable things like murder each other, attack others etc, but normal sane people don't do these things, do they? Fact is that we all responsible for our own actions in life.

the truth about electric cars
So is it fair to mandate to people buying new cars that they have to buy electric and also make their running costs increase exponentially. Yes I understand that they still do have an opportunity to buy an ICE car (for the time being) but The operative word here is CAN it does not automatically mean that everyone that does not adhere to your routine is automatically a real and positive danger to themselves and others. Yes, anyone who does drive when they are feeling tired is an idiot and a real risk at large, but the that they don't take a break every 2 to 3 hours but take them at longer intervals is a matter for them to decide. What is not mentioned in the FACTS you posted is what are the reasons why those drivers did/do what they did/do for instance for not everybody requires the same amount of sleep. A person doing hard physical labour more than likely needs more sleep than someone doing less strenuous work.

the truth about electric cars
Surely, this is an age related thing. I do find that I need to empty my tank far more as I get older than I did when I was younger, but I have yet to see anyone here openly admit everyone's need for a comfort break is not the same as anyone else's and nor is theirs the same as it was when they were younger, so, please can I respectively ask that posters stop treating others who beg to differ as if they either lairs or completely mad and putting other people at risk. Fact is everyone is different, my son who is in his forties can go all day long (over 8 hours) without the need for a comfort break or the need to stuff either food or drink down his neck, so let's get real can we?

They are supposed to read slightly over by a few percent but must never be below the actual speed.

the truth about electric cars
Correct but the most precise and accurate is the GPS based ones on my TomTom satnav and NextBase dashcam, both of which agree with each other 100% and they are what I generally use. When I use my ACC to maintain a maximum speed, I always set it to 31mph for a 30 limit, 42 for a 40 and 53 for a 50mph limit and then the GPS reads within the posted speed. I have yet to receive a speeding ticket and have been professionally driving for almost 60 years now,

the truth about electric cars
Some police forces only allow 1mph over the limit. My car has the capablity of having a digital speedo as well on display. I also have 2 different GPS speedos which are 4mph lower than the cars ones, so I drive by the GPS ones and have done so for years. Agreed, stay within the limits and protect your license, makes perfect sense.

the truth about electric cars
Yes, we all get that the idea is a means of comparison to help buyers decide which model to opt for, but when it seems that most people are actually getting nowhere near those figures then you have to ask, what is the point of them. It also begs the question about how can we trust anything else that they claim about a vehicle, like its CO2 figures, the amount NOx etc. Surely it would more beneficial if they were more realistic and gave figures that most drivers could actually achieve and maybe slightly better, then we could all make far better informed decisions when selecting our next cars and that could all be then for the right reasons.

This is not strictly all about electric cars, but much of what Harry is talking about is also applicable to electric cars and so here are his thoughts about the state of the car market.

But, gas pumps can be operated by a handle in the event of a power cut if push comes to shove as my old Mum used to say. 😉

the truth about electric cars
@Ootohere That just highlights to my mind at least that there is much work to do in the public charging area to help bring the costs down to make the whole cost of ownership if you have to relay on public chargers more into the realms of that for ICE drivers, £12.60 difference between the cheapest and the dearest public chargers is just plain stupid IMO.

It is for these very reasons plus the planned route might well be closed to due to RTA's or Police incidents etc is why I always like to start any long trip with a trip to the PFS to brim the tank, just in case the unthinkable should happen, especially if I'm starting from home.

the truth about electric cars
Yes, there were a lot of early cars that filler caps in strange locations, like the Renault 10, Dauphine, Floride and the Fiat 850 had theirs in the rear engine compartment. 1956 Chevy had theirs behind a dropdown tail light, Humber's had theirs behind the O/S rear reflector, 1960s Land Rovers were under the Seats and some Porsches (dependent on which exact model and year, have theirs in the front wings and a few were under the front trunk.

the truth about electric cars
If you buy a pre-registered car, then this will not apply, and as we all know, they are effectively new cars and the first years tax is being paid by the dealer pre-registering it?

Lane assist is dangerous
My experience on the Superb is that if you are just gripping the wheel lightly, the car will steer between the lane markings for you as long as you are going fast enough for the system to activate, take your hands off the wheel and the system will flash up a warning telling you to hold the wheel. If you grip the wheel tight enough it will not steer the car and you are able to cross the lane markings without needing to indicate, it just gives the wheel a slight vibration to let you know that you are changing lanes.

My 2023 MINI Cooper S Level 3 Electric leased from Motability which will be with me for 3 years & now a 2021 MG5 as a dog wagon.
Ouch £30 plus the Lecky, should have had ICE (😉) as nobody has to take longer then minutes to top up tanks, just saying.

the truth about electric cars
Hmm, or is it a case of killing 2 birds with the same stone? I mean, if the software bug is only on ICE models, then by squirrelling them off to an airfield away from most peoples eyes, they are then able to help hide the software issue and when people request a ICE car, they can try and plead that they just cannot get them and instead sell an EV that helps them get over the 22%. Then these cars will be made available again as ex demonstrators next year when hopefully the new software has been released?
