Air Intake modding? I've done it but is there any gain?

Featured Replies

Will try and get pics up later, but my Nokia PC suit doesn't run on vista so cant upload pics off phone..

Anyway..

I'm running with an PD160 intake pipe and uprated air filter, but its been bugging me that if you wiew the intake trumpet from the front grill view, the pipe is much larger, but there is a plastic section of the trumpet sliding down at a downward deflecting angle blocking off about half the diameter of the potential intake.

So i quickly took off the trumpet attached to the bumper and took to work with hacksawing the upper lip off, filled it down into a rather sleek trumpet allowing maximum diameter of the airintake pipe to be used.

So the question is, has this given my engine the ability to breath more air in = slight gain in power? Or now do all the bugs get sucked into the air intake rather than getting deflected down out of the pipe? Meaning i'd probably have to replace the Air filter more often.

Anyone else done this? doesn't it work?

Cars off the road till the weekend, new brakes are awaiting along with a oil change, fuel filter replacment, 5.1 dot brake fluid, new engine mounts (mine are fadgered), and im unsure on if i should ask them to slice the exhaust open, smash out the cats' insides and hope for a bit more of a swooshy noise from the exhaust? *maybe thats a bit ghetto but i'm sure its better than it inplace creating a big drag chamber for the exhaust gases.

All comments welcome.

You're not the first to do it, and the debate on 'PD160 Theory' has raged for years. AIUI, the barrier is there to deflect water getting into the inlet (if you look, there's a gap at the bottom for it to flow out of. The inlet's pretty high up on the Fabia, though, so the chances of hydraulicking are pretty small...

Why don't you just connect your phone to the PC using a USB cable (Usually provided with the phone) then just transfer them through that? As the Computer will then recognise it as a Mass Storage Device, does with my N95 anyway :)

I want a PD160, I've no idea if it helps though, some users say you can Rev it more though

Edit: Oh and a way to get around the Vista problem is to run the program in Windows XP mode, tis what had to do to upgrade the firmware on my N95 :D

Yeah do it (PD160 intake and uprated air filter), sod all the debate; I'm happy with it so therefore try it, you can only take it off again.

Yeah that used to work, but ive been messing about with both Nokia's and S/E getting them to link upto my PBX wirelessly for freeeeee calls anywhere :-) and i managed to break the Sony Ericsson Drivers which means it now cant detect the Nokia ones.. Go figure im stuck too.

I doubt it will make a lot of difference, I was told that diesels run in an excess of air anyway so intake mods can only do so much

It is restrictive as standard, and the PD160 *does* make a difference to ability to rev a little higher without a problem. That stated, without a remap you wont get much out of it.

For a remapped car, it does improve ability to get the air in so there can be a tad more fuelling without the smoke.

There is a significant difference in the intake diameter and it will help a touch with turbo spinup too.

With the price hike Seat put on the part though, the 'cheap value for money' element of this mod has gone so that's a shame

I found that after modifying the trumpet, the effect of the PD160 became really noticeable. Without it, only with the PD160, I was able to feel the motor revving more easily, but after the trumpet mod it was the real deal. I would say that the trumpet job is essential for PD160! :)

mm thanks for the comments,

Karaibrahim, wont really be driving the car after ive had a long needed oil change and fuel filter replacment, so not sure if i will be able to pin point any gains to the trumpet mod. However logically it makes sense and if you think its made a difference, then im excited to find out too.

Gotta drive it in 'limp mod' into Chepstow on monday, cars running fine but the front nearside brake pad is missing so the sound of piston on disk isn't somthing i want to hear much of, 312's going on though so i can manage the drive slow and not worry what damage is being caused to the disk.

Who'd a thought a pad could fall off? I mean i knew it was getting close to the time to change, but wow. Luckly i was on the slow section of my drive and managed to pump the brakes before needing to stop.

312mm are mint ;)
