Replacement car key

Featured Replies

I have read a few threads and am trying to piece together exactly what i need to do to get a replacement key for my fabia, and not get ripped off!

The situation:

I've bought a 2001 y reg skoda fabia classic 1.9 sdi (not central locking), I only have one key.

I don't have the plastic tag with the key code on, neither do i have the 4 digit SKC and i'm not entirely sure what either of these codes should look like, or wherelse i can get them from.

I know i can get hold of a blank key with a transponder chip that hasn't previously been programmed from ebay, however I'm not sure how I'd go about programming it.

I have heard of vag-com, roughly understand what it is- but have no access to such diagnostic equipment.

so the questions:

how do i get hold of the 4 digit SKC and key codes i need?

-do i NEED to go to the stealers?

-Can the codes be read from my existing key, or the car?

Once i have the codes whats the next step?

hope someone can help

cheers

If you don't have the 4 digit SKC already then I doubt you'll get it as the dealers don't see it now either - It's all done on line.

There are a couple of devices that claim to be able to extract the SKC but the level of success is questionable.

coding of keys dealer only, but you can find your 14 digit sk number on the back of your dash insert .

That's not going to help you, that number isn't the SKC.

I too bought a Fabia two years ago with only 1 key and didn't have the key code.

I found a guy on e-bay, e-mailed him a picture of my key and 3 days later he sent me a new cut key and a key code

(1 ABC 12345) format. Cost me £12.

I had to buy the top half, again, off e-bay, £5 ish tuned the central locking via hand book and a dealership charged me £24 to tune the demobilizer in.

So it only cost £24 for the dealer to code the key to the immobiliser? That seems cheap in comparison with what i've heard

It should be around 30 mins labour.

What on earths names a SKC??

I bought my Fabia from a main dealers with only 1 key, after a month or so the key never turned up so they ordered me a whole new key. Then all i had to do was let them programme it etc, they did all the work (took around 20-30 mins to fit)

Didnt need a SKC code??

They would have used an SKC code.

Secret Key Code - SKC. Currently 4 digits for Skoda although I believe VW/Audi use 7 digits.

How / where do they get this code as i have no info of it?? is it needed?

In the good old days if you gave the dealer your car details, the 14 digit immobiliser serial number and provided proof of entitlement, they would get the 4 digit SKC for you. Now they can't get them. For them to program a key, it is done online and they do not see the SKC. It is needed for any immobiliser related work, such as adding a new key and replacing the dash panel insert or engine control unit.

So in short it means that you have to go to a dealer to have the key matched.

I've said it time and time again that it would be interesting for somone to challenge this as I think legally they have to provide you with the code for a nominal fee. It would have to be through Skoda UK though.
