1.6 - Possible head gasket failure?

Hi, just wish to confirm my suspicions..but the car has the following symptoms.

Condensation spitting out the exhaust even when engine is at normal running temperature.

Oil slightly sludgy around inside of oil filler cap.. and around inside of the rubber Rocker case breather pipe, not white yet, but very pale brown, nearing cream.

Visible water droplets also visible around the inside of the cap.

Poor fuel economy, indicating the engine is over fueling to compensate where water could be diluting the petrol in some way... This can also be confirmed by the fact that very occasionally, when trying to start "when the engine is warm and has been running" there will be a pop, with some very brief white rich smelling smoke from the engine.. not happening when the engine is running though.

Water appears to be circulating inside the reservoir, via the small expansion pipe at the top of the reservoir.. As if it is being forced up there, only conclusion i could come to was the pressure from the cylinder is forcing it up there.. as the pipe is located above the engine. It isn't the thermostat.. as the radiator gets hot, If it was stuck the radiator wouldn't and the engine would quickly overheat.

Runs perfectly fine when cold.. problems start when the engine gets to running temperature.. As if the expansion is causing a hairline gap to increase, therefore creating the problem?

Also.. when the car is left on idle for a while it will end up going off on its own then have trouble starting it.

Any electrical fault should of shown up on the diagnostics which was done.. and also a few of the sensors had been replaced by a garage.. although in my opinion "unnecessarily.

So my conclusion is the head gasket has possibly failed, or the head has warped/cracked.

Have you checked your oil? Is there water in there?

If you don,t do long runs then these engines can emulsify giving the symptons you have just stated.

Hi, true, most engines as far as i know can emulsify oil in that way and would explain that, and possibly the exhaust.. but its the other symptoms on top as well.

Short journeys don't normally cause a pressurization of the cooling system, causing the water to be pushed through the expansion pipe on the reservoir. As far as i know. or effect the engine in the way the engine is currently running.

Get a chemical sniff test done, where they suck coolant vapour through a blue dye, if it turns green or yellow there are combustion gasses in the coolant.

Water will circulate via the small pipe, emulsification around the oil filler and breather are normal and the poor running could be down to a faulty temperature sensor and dirty throttle body.

Throttle body has been cleaned, and temperature sensor changed.. the garage even felt it was necessary to change the "speed sensor".. and "airflow sensor"... and "Crank position sensor for new parts... none of which resolved the problem:S

I will be conducting a sniff test before any action is taken, as a test kit is on order.

Yep, sniff test is the way to go.
