Is it possible?...

Featured Replies

Ok, Is it possible to get my engine bored out to make it a 2.0ltr instead of a 1.9?

Would I see any difference? How much would it cost?

This is what my mate had to say on it, is he right? I just wanted to do it to say I have the only 2.0Tdi Furby lol :P

Well I don’t know the VRS engine, so couldn’t tell ya how much it can be bored out to, but yeah it’d be possible to increase the capacity of it for sure.

A standard rebore and hone (Honing is basically smoothing the cylinder walls, as a standard boring process can leave cutting marks and the walls of the cylinder rough) is generally about £100 - £200 depending on how much you want taken off and how much setting up work needs to be done.

Bare in mind you have to provide them with a fully stripped engine, with nothing on it, and I mean nothing, to sensors, oil / water pumps, no sump, no crank or pistons, oil sprayers removed, all pulleys and everything. Especially you have to give them a bare block for them to carry out the work.

Then once you get it back you’ll need to purchase new pistons to fit the increased cylinder diameter, I’d budget on about £400 for a half decent set, so already your talking about £500 - £600 and that’s if you do all the work yourself. You then have to reassemble the engine, and get it mapped, as because you’ve increased the capacity the compression ration will also have changed, so the ECU will have to be remapped to take this into account.

To be honest, it’s not really worth it on a standard road car, unless you’ve ran out of other things to modify engine wise, reboring the engine is basically the last set of the engine modification table, as it’s the most costly mod to perform.

Oh and on a standard car, I doubt you’d see much difference, you might on yours because it’s a turbo and you’d have to get the ECU remapped and the fuelling sorted out, but most of the power gain would be from the remap and not the increased cylinder capacity.

dont bother, spend your money on inflatable dolls - thats my pick of the month

Think i'll stick with SWMBO, but cheers for the advice  :P

but seriously i think the gains would be minimal,

Have a look over on TDi club. The VW transporter 2.5 pistons (5 cyl) will fit a rebored 1.9.

IMO there are reasons for going to 2L rather than sticking @ 1.9. However, when I asked Allards, they said "they don't think it's an economic way to proceed".

I read that as being "unless you do 95% of the disassembly/reassembly yourself."

IMO the way to do it is to buy a 2nd engine and have it rebuilt. Assuming you can get the lot done for <£1500. You might manage that if you get the short block built and you do all of the rest.

Try factoring in all of the other little bits and pieces required to make the job worth its while. Upgraded intercooler, upgraded turbo, upgraded clutch, Limited slip diff, big PD injectors? Also think about cams, ported heads, ported exhaust manifolds/turbine housings etc.

The numbers dwarf the money you spend/save on building the engine. It needs to be something you want to do for the hell of it rather than best bang for ££££s.

I cant see it being an economical option unless you're going to go the whole hog with the engine.

I've sourced an ASZ engine with 17k on it for £600 if you do decide to go that way. :)
