Goodbye Superb - Hello Mondeo!

Featured Replies

Hi All,

Well today I traded my Skoda Superb in for a new Mondeo 2.0 Tdci Zetec hatchback....

It was sad to leave the Superb surrounded by all those Fords,but I have to say I am sure I have done the right thing.

I owned the 2.5V6 Tdi auto' Elegance for nearly three years and here are my impressions;

1.)I have not had ANY problems with the engine - it never let me down and drove over 52,000 miles (and across 8 countries in it's first few weeks on a European Alps holiday)without ever pausing for thought.So a great engine.

2.) I have a fair few problems;

a.) The dreaded floods in the front passengers footwell,drivers footwell and rear left passengers footwell.As a result,I have not had internal lights of any kind (inc the boot) for over 15 months - that is workable in the summer months but during the winter I could have had a dead body in the boot without knowing it (my ex-boss could have fitted in there....).

I find it unacceptable that Skoda UK allowed these cars to be sold when there was such a fundamental design fault.We have all spent our own money buying a product that we had faith in,only to get soaking wet carpets and the resulting broken ECU's cutting out all the lights.

Why didn't I get the ECU repaired?

Well,I have very little faith in any of the 4 Skoda dealerships I have dealt with during my Skoda ownership experience.

At one of them it was ME who was telling them what the problem was (Xenon headlight not working all of the time) and how to deal with it,having read your brilliant website.

Only two weeks ago,having booked my car in for a 60,000 miles cambelt change,I was phoned an hour after leaving it at the dealership to be told "we didn't know it was a 2.5V6 [yes they did - they have my details and have "serviced" it before] and we have never done a cambelt on a 2.5V6,so it will have to stay in overnight and it will cost more than the £620 quoted".....I could picture the scene as they spent hours working out how to change the cambelt and then charge me for the honour of their inexperience.

So I asked them to forget it.They never worked out how to mend the broken drivers window either - but they did charge me £28 telling me that it certainly WAS broken!

b.)I have had the broken reversing bleeper that became a banshee whenever the car reversed - I have read on this site how some of your bleepers have broken over THREE times.....this is crazy.

Looking at the new soon to be launched Superb,I am sure it will be a great car,but my experience of Skoda has been - fault-free engine,shockingly naive and incapable dealerships and fundamental design faults that should never have been allowed without being rectified at Skoda's expense.

My Mondeo is parked on the driveway tonight and I feel better already - I owned the Mk1 Mondeo so I know about the dealers etc,but I do think I will have a better experience than I did with the Skoda.

I want to thank you all at Briskoda - this is simply the best automotive website in the world and your knowledge and advice has really helped me.

Dare I say it,when I see you swanning past me in your new version Skoda's in the Autumn,I shall wave and wish you well and be a little envious,but then I shall remember the sodden driver's footwell on holiday in Normandy and the dealership who sold me a Superb with faulty brakes 3 days before I went on a holiday across Alpine passes (I did tell them I was going to Austria/Switzerland).

Best wishes to you all

Miko

It's a shame when your entire experience of a marque is ruined by idiot dealerships. :thumbdwn:

Good luck with the new motor.

A fair report as to what happens when the VAG glass palace brigade get out of their depth. As the new Superb will be more complex than the old one and given the business model, trading policies and recruitment quality evident in the VAG dealerships it can only get worse.

So, I don't blame you for jumping off and as your old car was a V6 auto, you did very well to offload it before it bit you.

I hope you didn't lose too much money and enjoy your new car - just be very careful with the Delphi fuel system.

Good luck with your new car and hope you enjoy.

If you think SKoda dealers are poor, you havent had the misfortune of a ford Dealer.

Just dont touch Dagenham motors. They are diabolical. Not bleeding breaks, not changing oil on a MAJOR service, ordering the wrong parts on 4 occasions meaning the rear doors of my works tranny were U/S...... the list goes on.

The only way any of the works vehilces got fixed were under pressure from Lombard leasing when my (then) employer refused to pay the leasing bill!

Best of luck. Your Mondeo spec is a useful benchmark price wise for new Superb. Autoebid has £4,347 off the Ford so let's see how well the new Superb does when it comes out.

Whats the problem with the Mondeo Delphi fuel system?

Jenks

Poor quality control and a marginal design. The roller followers operate near their stress limit in the HP pump for fuel of the highest lubricity. For poor quality fuel, early failure is a possibility which may also occur at any time due to variable machining and tolerancing of the component parts. (Ford bean-counter division at work).

The rollers for the Bosch pump elements (unit injectors) in the VAG PD run in engine oil.
