Does the radio switch off or the interior light come on when the key is removed from the ignition? If not the S contact is likely to be at fault.

Removing the key activates the S contact on the ignition switch, this could be sticky and need lubricating. Lubricating ignition lock barrels needs to be done carefully and sparingly.

that is the case the radio didnt switch off and the light does not come on when the key is removed. so do i just squirt a bit wd40 where the ignition key goes?

You can try that, use it sparingly and work it in with the key.

failing that what else can i do?

Get the wiring checked, replace the ignition switch.
