Tyres???

Featured Replies

Hi guys

Gonna need two new tyres for the 4x4 soon. Don't like spending a fortune on rubber so what do you recommend?

Oh and when does the Haldex oil and filter need changing and how easy is that to do?

Thanks

The Haldex oil should be changed every 20,000 miles and the filter every 40,000 miles. You will need a special tool for the latter. Read the link below for a DIY guide.

When buying tyres, bear in mind that the Owner's Manual states that the same tyres must be fitted to all four wheels if the ESP system is to operate properly. Differing rolling circumferences of the tyres can result in an undesirable reduction in engine output.

Eagle F1s and Toyo TR-1s seem to be the most popular and aren't that expensive.

I have just gone for Eagle F1s, there are plenty of threads on tyres though if you have a quick search if you want some more in depth debate!

I just paid £118 each (all-in) for Toyo T1-Rs through Blackcircles.com (the garage I use is one of their fitters but couldn't get a similar tyre for a similar price, so I had to go the long-winded route), in 245/40/17 95Y spec for the back on my M3. They're a way off run-in yet but the turn-in was immediately massively better than the (worn almost to slick) Avon ZZ3s that came off ever gave. The Avons weren't *bad* at all, "only" cost £108 each a year ago and lasted 19k but still, the Toyos are better. 205/50 or 225/45 91Z should be cheaper, of course.

I went for them this time because I had them on a Civic Type-R 3 years back and they were much better than the standard Bridgestones, especially in the wet.

My Octy vRS has Goodyear NCT5 205/50/17 91Ys on at the moment and frankly they're horrible, the Contintental SportContact 2s (well, something like that anyway) that came on it were a better tyre. I wanted but couldn't get GSD3s at the time.

Thanks Fellas

What do you all think about changing all 4 or having them all the same?

Normally on 4x4's thats not the case, sespecially given most run on run flats nowadays?

Thanks again

There is alot of raving about the Kumho's Ecsta's.

I have just had 2. You culd do the whole car for £260 - £300

Ive tried the Avon range (ZZ3 & ZV3), and now I'm trying the Khumo KU31's.

They seem better than the Avon's to me, and especially good in the wet.

It's a well priced performance tyre.

I could repeat some stories about Avons, but won't.

Just say T1-Rs, and put the pressures up 2PSI on what the filler cap says, basedon several examples showing an underinflation wear pattern at Skoda recommended pressures.
