Hi Simon,

I have an 04 Fabia VRS. I purchased a cable from eBay which cost approx £13. Its from a company called Alpha-Bid. I then downloaded VAG-COM shareware version 409.1 and installed it on my XP notebook. There are limits to what you can do using this version. You cannot for instance do an auto scan (scans all controllers for faults) but the way around this is to do a scan for controllers in the vehicle then scan the individual controllers. It will show up all faults codes (providing there are some!). Unfortunately if you want to enable alarm chirp, auto lock, auto unlock etc. you will have to upgrade to the registered version. This is what i have done in the end and it allows you to do more with the car. The upgrade cost is very reasonable at $99 and if you ever decide to get a proper Ross-Tech package they will discount by $99.

Hope this info helps.

Very sensible and informative post, Thanks.
