Gearbox on the way out or just......

Featured Replies

Hi everyone

Car is a VRS estate (05) 100K FSSH

1. Here are the symptoms: groaning/moaning sound comming from front near side, not too loud and most noticeble on a smooth road at a contant speed and when slowing gently. Much like when a wheel bearing has started to go. Noise is still there if gears are in neautral and/or clutch is down.

Front near side bearing was replaced by skoda about 1K miles ago.

2. I have also noticed another noise which is only really noticeable when the radio is off and windows are shut... As the revs build it sounds a little like a milk float! Most apparent when exelerating normally in 2nd, but deffo still there in other gears although covered by road noise as speed builds. Seems to only happen in gear, cant notice when engine is reved out of gear.

Do all these cars make the noise described in #2 and the noise in #1 could just be another buggered/DOA wheel bearing?? Or could I be looking at replacing my gearbox in the near future??

Any help/wise words much appreciated. Thank you!

Is the noise more pronounced when turning corners?

Try going round a bend and coast in neutral to break the drive from Eng/Gbox and see if its still there.

1. Sounds like a bearing to me, but could also be a rubbing brake pad? (just throwing possibilities in here).

2. Sounds like the grearbox alright. I have that on my one. Just make sure that the gearbox oil is good and it should be fine....I hope. Cause if its not then I'll need a new one too :squint:

You will soon know when a gearbox is on the way out. it will sound like one of the old tramcars form the 1950's/

Pretty much identical symptoms to my Mk2 vRS - which has a feck load of Oil all over the Underside of the car - Gearbox Side...

1. Im going to change my wheels front to back at the weekend to make sure its not a shagged tyre, if that doesnt help I will take it back to Skoda to change the bearing again. I had another good listen this morning and I didnt hear anything untill I was on a 40+ Mph road and then most noticable when up to 60 - 70 and again when slowing past 40 down to 15 then it shut up, doesnt seem so loud round left bends, and doesnt make any difference if I am in gear or not.

2. When I said milk float I may have been a bit harsh... The sound is the same but a bit quieter, it doesnt come from the left side like #1 either, more directly in front. I will check under my engine bay this weekend for oil... Skoda didnt mention anything at the service/cambelt 2 months ago.

Thanks for the replies... Will keep you posted. ;)

(2) - are you sure that's not just the turbo whoosh?

I suppose it could be to do with the turbo as it also only make noise in gear (when under load) but I here the turbo regularly and its more of a high pitch whistle...

I have had 3 turbo cars before and have all made the high pitch whistle when comming on boost, but saying that they were all Toyota GT-Four's and the turbo is at the front of the engine.... hmmmm

I only occasionally hear the turbo on mine.

Mine sounded like it was in front of me, more than to the left - and today it was confirmed by Skoda that the gearbox is fecked...:thumbdwn:

I found Oil on the underside of the car, not so much under the bonnet - wasnt really visible from the top

and mine only made the noise in gear, under load too - and only on acceleration, not on deceleration... ;)

The noise described in #1 is comming from the left but I am pretty sure that is the wheel bearing gone again and it happens regardless of in gear or not... The noise described in #2 is more directly infront of the driver and is there on de-acceleration too. My gears feel fine... Did yours before being condemmed?

Thanks
