Changing front pads

Featured Replies

Just a quick check.

I know I need a 7mm allen key !!!

Is there anything else I should be aware of whilst changing them on mk1 octy rs.

Any problems I may encounter or new bolts I may need etc.

Answers on a postcard:)

TIA

Nah, pretty muc straight forward.

Big pair of waterpump pliers or a g clamp to push the piston back.

Excellent.

Got BFO water pump pliers.

Many thanks again Ross.

btw swmbo car is tip top now:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup:

Screwdriver to flick off the retaining clips, white spirit and some kitchen towel to clean the faces of the caliper that come into contact with the adhesive bits on the pads, tube of threadlock?.... can't think of much else

New bolts have thread lock on them, but some more wouldn't do any harm.

You dont replace the bolts on the front of the Octavia. Personally i've never used loctite on them, if they are done tight enough they ain't gonna come loose.

Just got home to find a nice new set of Mintex Extremes waiting for me.

They come with an anti-vibration shim which looks to be a sticky pad.

Do I bother copper slipping them or do I just do around the sticky pad??????????

Just copper slip the contact areas on the pad where it sits on the carrier. dont do the backs.

Ahhh the magic question, I can't say I've been told not too, as I'd have to kill you:P

Jabbasport has them in stock at the moment!!!!!

Anyhoo all done and took a little longer than I would have liked, but only because I had to hunt for my waterpump pliers which were deep within my shed as I no longer have a garage.

Bedded them in as per the instructions. Nice bite on them now, but I need to change the brake fluid so they ain't as good as they can be yet.

Job's a good 'un.

Many thanks too those who helped :thumbup::thumbup:

Remove the spring. Remove the allen's. Remove the caliper. With a file clean where the pads slide and the piston top and opposite surface where the rear of the pads rest. I put 5cc brake fluid under the piston dust cover and massage it round holding the caliper so it runs inside to the seal, to lube the piston. This helps the piston slide back easy and cleans it on the way, avoiding sticking and torn seals. Then push it back with a g-clamp. Clean stuff up, touch of copper grease but NOT on friction surfaces, well copper grease the slides after cleaning out the rubbers, assemble.

Don't forget to sand down the hub and inside of the wheel and lightly copper grease.

Greg.

might be stupid question but what is a G-clamp?

I am changing my discs n pads this next week and need to know what to do really as it is the first time I have changed the pads, I kinda cheeted when I put my discs on last time, I just pushed the cailpers with pads in them over the discs and they worked fine.

I just kinda guessed. Just do them tight enough If that makes sense.

Mine haven't fallen off yet so I guess I was about right.

Although you may want too double check this info.:o

125 Nm / 92 lbs ft.

(that roughly translates to as tight as you can get them using both hands on a standard socket wrench, in my case followed by lying on my back and giving a good shove with a boot :) or about the same as a wheel bolt)
