has it immobilised itself ?

Featured Replies

Hello all, yesterday my wife went to turn the ignition key and it would not turn (this has happened before and we have bought a new barrel from skoda ,we just have'nt got round to fitting it yet) .My question is we can now get it to turn and all the facia lights turn on but ,when we try the starter nothing happens .Do you think that fitting our new barrel will cure this (i have one of your fitting guides already) or do you think it has immobilised for some reason ? And does this mean an expesive trip to a VAG dealer ?Thanks you all.

I would strongly suspect the barrel since it already has given trouble, and since you already have a new one waiting to be fitted that's where I would start.

If it was the immobiliser you would be able to turn the key and turn the engine over but it wouldn't start or at least only run for a second or two it wouldn't lock the key and prevent you from turning it... get the new barrel fitted!

Hello again .Thanks once again for the exellent help.you lot know your Skodas !.I have fitted the barrel swapped chip over in the key and it all works fine . I did however have a little bit of a problem with the drilling of the snap bolt .(being a ham fisted lug) I managed to snap the cast aluminium mounting using my stud extractor .So i had to angle grind off the mounting from the steering column (i was much better at this than drilling the bolts, mostly from my many years of practice taking Land Rover bolts (nuts and everthing ) off ). This mounting cost under £10 with the snap bolts. So if anyone is a bit apprehensive about drilling the snap bolt ,may i suggest using a <.8 mm steel cutting disk on the two bolts around the column and re-using the small clasp piece but ditching the rest of it .It will save time i think, and uses a lot less skill (which i dont posses).

Great stuff!

Another problem sorted!
