TomTom x20 & Nokia N95

Featured Replies

I'm looking at getting a TomTom 520 or 720. I've seena few snippets here and there on the web that makes out that these TomTom's don't perform as a handsfree kit with the Nokia N95 / N95 8GB so just wondered if anyone is using one of the x20 series units along with an N95 or N95 8GB and if so whether they work ok together.

Cheers

Dave.

If you put Tomtom on your N95 or use Nokia Maps along with a Nokia CK7W bluetooth car kit the voice guidance is put through the Nokia speaker or the car speaker depending on which you decide to conect. and with a Telemute lead you dont even have to have the radio on!

I've already got TomTom on my phone but as they've stopped supporting / updating it well over a year ago now the maps will never be updated..... I use it when ever i go abroad etc.... but not over here..... I've also got the latest Garmin mobile XT software on the phone too and a GO300 (which ius what the 520/720 will be replacing).

But anyway i'm still sticking with my original question of whether anyone is using the 520 or 720 with their N95 or N95 8GB and not having any probs with the bluetooth handsfree setup.

Cheers

I paired my N95 8GB to my TomTom 520. It was just a quick test to see how well it performed. I had no problem with the bluetooth connection & the phone worked fine.

I Have to say I thought the voice volume, speaker and mic were nothing short of useless. I tested this while parked up, I really can't imagine trying to use it with road noise in the background.

I didn't try running it through the car speakers.

I have a Parrot unit so have no use for this feature. As said it was just a test. I'm not sure about phone book / contacts etc but in answer to your question, yes it did connect and work.

HTH.

I use a TT 730 with (mainly a Nokia 6233) but sometimes with the n95 8Gb. (you can have several phones paired and switch between them easily).

The handsfree for me works fine up to about 50mph IN A TRANSIT VAN!!

There have been reports of faulty speakers in TT's x20's

The wireless data with the N95 is a pain to get working, well I mean its not as easy as the 6233 but it gets there in the end.

Note that the x20 series is now discontinued and has been replaced with the x30 series. No big issue as the x20's can be updated to give the same functionality as x30's as they are the same inside. I say this so you make sure if you still get an x20 you get a good price.

The update to an x20 would consist of updating from navcore 7 SW to navcore 8 which will be free. The maps that come with the x20 will be 7.x version that wont offer full functionality of Navcore 8 and not sure if the latest map guarantee will give you the latest version of 7.x maps or let you take the latest version of 8.x maps.

Whatever you do, when you get the machine, do a full backup using windows explorer (not TT home). ie, copy ALL files on the TT to a folder on your hard drive.

See Pocket GPS World for details on this.

Thanks for the replies guys.......

If i can get a good deal on a x20 unit i'll go for that..... I can get a 520 for £155 brand new from Halfrauds using a tomtom discount site i know...... If i get a chance in the next few weeks i'll probably get that. If not it'll probably wait till Christmas and then i'll let the mrs buy me a 530 for me instead.

I'm ok with updating navcore software etc.... My GO300 is currently running Navcore v8.002 ok with v805 UK & Ireland maps. Runs all the IQ routing, Advanced lane guidance and TTS ok but looses the edges of the screen due to it being 4:3 instead of widescreen. It runs a little slowly but then it only has half the RAM of the newer units and a slower processor. I've also got more back-ups on the PC than you can shake a stick at. :D

I must admit i do prefer the all black look of the newer x30 units (My GO300 has the black facia plates on it at present) but just can't warrant the extra £100 or so just for that.... especially as the x20 is physically the same but in gun metal grey and running navcore 7!!!!

My idea behind unsing the bluetooth feature is that at present i use the handsfree speaker on the N95 8gb which works ok even upto 70mph or so on a motorway..... Suppose i must have good hearing.... Now i'm assuming that the built in speaker on the TomTom will be better than the phone so for the odd occasion i use it it'll be an improvement on now.

Like I say, I use the TT in a 57 plate transit van and is good enough up to about 50 or 60. Too many rattles and wind noise for any speed higher than that TBH. I can imagine that in a car (I dont use the HF in the octy as it has the OEM installed) it would be good to a higher speed.

Will all depend on placement of the unit too. When I had my 730 on the windscreen with the sucker it wasnt as good. Now its on a brodit active mount/proclip'd onto the dash near the steering wheel it is that little bit closer and easier to hear.

Well done for running v8 navcore and maps on a go300......... bet that didnt come from TT Home did it ;-)
