Steering Rack Replaced

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I have had my steering rack replaced under warranty (steering rack recall) on my 07 Scout & must say full credit to the guys at Spirit Volkswagen Banbury.

I was reluctant to say the least of taking it in anywhere to get replaced purely because of having such a major mechanical part replaced in a new'ish car, & because of fears of crabbing, steering off-center etc,etc....

However a proffessional job was done & after a full 4 wheel alignment it feels better than before & no more creaks .

P.S - Mods - I think Spirit VW Banbury is worth a mention in the dealers list on the Reviews part of this site for their courtesy, informative staff & the fact that they spotted the steering rack recall & Skoda Rugby didn't!

what was the problem/symptoms with it?

Creaking/electro-mechanical sound like an electric motor under stress!

This was only when turning the steering wheel left & stopped when you stopped turning or on full lock.

Otherwise the steering was fine & at no point was it 'fautly' other than this noise.

As I understand it it was a fairly common recall amongst other VAG cars, Golf/Leon etc...pre- 2007 builds

Ahh yes, that old chesnut :)
