number plates

Featured Replies

No they're not, but in all honesty you'd never get pulled for them as the fonts are legal.

i thought as much

might have to get a set then

cheers

Side badge is illegal (unless its the Euro symbol with GB identifier)

Manufacturer's name and post code is not shown so that's illegal

Compliance to British Standard is not shown, so thats illegal

Illegal number plates may lead to MOT failure and fine of up to £1000 (although £30 seems to be common for a first offence)

I'm not suggesting you shouldn't buy one and as has been said you will "probably" get away with it, but make sure you go into it with your eyes open!

Payed a couple of quid less than that for my show ;) plates, but the company I used don't seem to have any available for Skoda at the moment.

never really thought about this to be honest, always just had bog standard plates

but....a few years back for one of the football tournaments, may have been world cup I can't remember, one of the tabloids (The Sun?) gave away a free england sticker as a side badge for your number plate. Was this illegal then?

Basically, my view on unusual plates is that, if you drive sensibly, you're unlikely to ever be pulled just for your plates. However, if you drive like a tool, then the rozzers will pull you over and will be chuffed to see that you have non-conforming plates on your car and will slap a fine on you.

well i did read the bit saying they were show plates but it also says when you build the plates the lettering is uk 3d legal, was just checking which is ashame cause i like the look of them, like you say though if your driving sensibly then im sure you would be fine, but it aint really worth the risk cause lets face it, everyone gives there car a good blast every now and again, and there are rozzers hiding everywhere waiting to pounce lol

thanks for the replys

:D

No, there is provision for the numberplates to have the England flag as long as it conforms to some set standards.

the main thing is the lack of british standard code which needs to be shown on cars from 2001 or someyear round about that, it shows your plate is using the correct font and is of the proper reflective material. the side band will only get picked on if you display another country's banding. i've got court later this month due to my illegal styled plates.

illegal, with vosa now targeting private cars more i wouldnt think they are worth the hassle tbh.

This Ebay seller does fully legal plates quite cheap with no need for paper work CAR TRAILER CARAVAN NEW NUMBER PLATES £9.50 PAIR LEGAL on eBay, also Number Plates Surrounds, Exterior Styling, Car Tuning Styling, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 11-Sep-08 11:18:22 BST) Haven't bought any from them yet so cannot comment on the quality, but it's in my bookmarks ready for when I want some :) and not sure whether to go for St Georges Cross or a Union Jack.

No I don't think they are legal as you have the skoda logo in the flag section, but at the same time you also have the European flag there so it's a bit of an odd one.

what you can do to get round the legal issue of the side banding is seperate it from the plate itself

such as this:

platekk5.jpg

ignore the red background as thats just what i sat the two parts on when taking the picture. when stuck on the car they appear to be all as one but the technicality is the band is no longer part of my plate as its seperate leaving the police with nothing to say on the matter.

i presented this to a traffic officer for his opinion and he didnt see anything wrong with what i had done.

I have discussed this and I will give you my opinion. I must stress that this is my personal opinion and not that of Lothian and Borders Police.

I would personally not take action over this plate as it appears to comply with the legislation in terms of reflectivity, font, BS marking, name of supplier and postcode. The only possible issue might be the CZ country identifier, but this is seperate to the plate, so is not technically relevant. The red band round the outside is not an issue as far as I'm concerned.

I certainly don't see this as a priority in terms of road safety or prevention of antisocial behaviour.

;)

With ANPR cameras popping up more and more over the place, number plate offences are a big thing at the moment. Mostly to do with illegal fonts, or mis-representing the number plate.

At the end of the day, its a risk you decide to take. It could be a £30 fine, or a Vehicle Defect rectification notice, which can set you back the cost of an MOT (or worse as above a court appearance).

My last car had almost legal looking number plates, had something along the lines of 3D font. Went on a course where ANPR was one of the topics didn't realise that they were sat in the entrance clocking everyone for demo purposes, mine was flagged as unreadable by the machine but fine to the eye. Nothing was mentioned, but is always provides the 'commiting a traffic violation' excuse that would be needed for a tug.
