How to check second hand 312s????

Featured Replies

I've just bought some second hand 312mm brakes off an octavia vrs.

They arrived today. I will be buying new pads and discs but what should I be checking on the calipers and carriers to know if they are in good working order?

I don't know too much about brakes but I need to know if they're ok because I have 7 days to send them back if they're not.

My dad said I shouldn't realy be buying second hand brakes but reading threads on here, using second hand calipers and carriers should be ok??

Any help would be much appreciated.

Cheers Luke.

Check,

1)Piston seals for damage, splits and tears.

2)Pistons move freely in the caliper

3)Sliders, not caked in crap, plastic caps in place

4)Bleed nipples, in place and free flowing.

Send Lummox a PM - he's based in Newport Pagnell, and what he doesn't know probably isn't worth knowing. He can probably fit them for you too.

We got that in hand mate :)

Yeh. Lummox will fit them for me.

I need to buy some new discs and pads first though.

I'm going to check them over now.

Are you buying standard or something fruity?

They seem to be ok from what I can see.

I'll have a proper look in the daylight tommorrow and get my dad to check them over.

Haven't made my mind up with discs and pads yet.

What would you suggest?

Standard will be more than enough. If you want genuine parts give me a shout, i'll get a better discount that you will from main dealer.

Hi there mate.

Do your 312mm have a plastic cap on them where the calipers slide onto the caliper?

Hi there mate.

mine do,

like a dust/crap cover to stop them getting onto the allen bolt

HTH

Yep they should do.

Mine dont have one, and I went to the VW garage with the part number given and they gave me the caps for the bleed valves...

which dust cover do you mean? between the caliper and carrier or to go over the end where ive circled

I got new part 15's when i purchased 312mm carriers

like a dust/crap cover to stop them getting onto the allen bolt

Thats part number 6

5 and 6 is the bleed valve and cover.

Is the rubber cover you are referring to on the caliper?

aka part 15

Whoops your right I didn't look properly.

There should be a cap on the end of the hole where the Hex bolt tightens on to the caliper and carrier.

If that makes sense.

Although I can't see it on that picture

exactly

mine dont have it and theres no part number for it on there

I've just given them a quick clean

They came up better than I expected but I'll be given them a proper clean at the weekend.

Actually look cleaner than my standard brakes! Lol.
