Anyone know this?

Can anyone tell me what should happen when you take the oil filler cap off the 1.4 16v (AUB) engine? Also how does the engine breath, is it like the octy or does it have a closed air circulation?

My partners Fabia, has had engine managment light trouble since March/April time, since we brought it.

The issue is still unresolved. LHT skoda have looked at it, they changed the complete throttle body unit, the software on the Ecu, and also they have run many of diagnostics on it, still no closer to finding the problem.

Before we brought it it had a new EGR valve as this was thought to be the problem. The car has an extended warrenty, but we don't want to use it unless it will sort the problem for good.

Any input is gratefully recieved and any help or advice is welcome too.

Many thanks

Alan

Temperature sensor?

My cous has the 1.4 16v

His engine management light came on and we thought it was using oil a fair bit.

Throttle body was cleaned and reset.

the lights came back on after a month or so, it was thought it could have been the lambda sensor

Temperature sensor was changed and the lights havent come back on and the car is running fine.

If you have paid for an ext warranty then use it.

:iagree: - you paid for the warranty, so use it.

If you can get fault codes, that would help.

And I don't understand "how does the engine breath" in this context. I'd normally take it to mean "where does air come from for the throttle body", but that doesn't seem like a sensible question for the context. Other than minor differences in where they tap into the intake, all engines use a closed circuit oil vapour recirculation system, bleeding excess into the intake to be burnt in the engine these days, if that's relevant.

Ok i'll try to explain what i mean LOL

I have a 1.9SDI Octy, when i take off the oil filler cap i can feel air pushing out of the opening.

On the fabia when i do the same there is not air flow out, and also when the cap is off, the engine managment and EPC and Triangular symbol with an arrow around it come on and the engine runs like a pig.

Is this normal? Or could this be something wrong? If it is something wrong what could cause this effect?

i've got pics of the lights but can't upload them

are you saying the Engine management light has been lit since you bought the car?

Is it running OK?

Is it possible that the garage didnt have the means to reset the service computer?

My dads Honda had the Engine management light on until the lambda sensor was changed. The ran ok with the light lit.

The car runs ok, but the most annoying thing is the light will go off when it has been reset and maybe stay off for a week or so then it will come back on.

These are the lights i get

Looks like the same issue as my cousins Fabia 1.4 16v

Has the temperature sensor been changed?

What is the fault code that is causing the engine manangement light to come on? (circled)

I have seen a few of these where an excesive flow error for the EGR system has come up. On top of the EGR valve is a variable resistor which turns when the valve turns, the ECU monitors how open the valve is from this resistance. What happens is that the EGR pipe under the throttle body gets blocked, restricting the exhaust gas flow, the ECU then opens the valve a little more to increase the flow until it is fully open and the desired amount of exhaust gas is still not present in the inlet - hence the excessive flow code, when in reality there is no or too little flow.

The first thing a non informed garage will do is replace the EGR valve, when what is required is a simple cleaning out of the pipe. I would have thought that this would have been noticed when the throttle body was removed.

Yeah, right again my good friend.

The nodule for what of a better word is more than likely blocked under the throttle body. Having said that I have seen someone replace a faulty valve only to then put the gasket on upside down creating the same fault again.

I wouldn't take the filler cap off with the engine running as the the breather is a closed system. If you take the cap off, the ecu will think there is an air leak and put the engine management light on.

I had a problem with my AUB engined Fabia caused the the heater on the front lambda probe going faulty. If the engine was hot and stopped and started a few times the engine management light would go off. However, if the car was started cold the light would come on and stay on. Also the car would hesitate and be generally unpleasant to drive for a few minutes until there was sufficient heat in the probe for it to work correctly. The light would still stay on though.

Don't think the temp sensor has been changed, Skoda have changed the throttle body and gasket, Another garage said they changed and cleaned the pipes to do with the breathers. Skoda also changed software and checked the EGR valve was working properly.

since we've had the car it has been to,

Skoda for;

New ECU software, new throttle body and gasket, EGR replacement and a sensor to do with it. As far as i can remember the fault code was load detection or something Not sure of the code.

It has also been to a seperate garage for;

Cleaning of the EGR valve and throttle body, Cleaning and replacement of breather hoses.

The car is due in again on friday so i will get the code if i can then to try put some more light in to the search. I have read that the AUB engine is prone to Piston rings, would this cause similar symptoms?

How can we check?

Piston rings causes excess oil consumption and oil in the inlet system. this inturn can cause faults by clogging the EGR system and the MAP sensor int he manifold. It also can cause lambda faults as the oil in the intake charge confuses the mixture.

what effect would those things have on the general running of the engine?

I've checked the oil level today, i will check it again in a day or two, how much are we talking, major level changes in very short time or noticeble change?

Is there anything i should get the garage to check?

I'll keep reading for my education; there are people on this thread who've forgotten more than I know.
