Brake pipes. Pipe and union nut dimensions? Cheap flaring kit recommendations?

Featured Replies

Can anyone confirm the correct dimensions for brake pipes and union nuts for the Felicia and Favorit?

My guess is 3/16 diameter pipe and M10X3/16 male union nuts. The originals appear to have a single flare.

Also on pipe flaring tools. I understand that many people say cheap = crap flares, but there's got to be one that produces adequate flares on Kunifer pipe and happens to be cheaper than the rest. Anyone have any recommendations on a good flaring tool?

Some of the cheapest I have come across include these at toolstation. This one is £10.18 (which from searching on the net appears to be the same as a rolson branded one)

and this is £18.98

Information...

all the brake pipe unions are metric M10x1mm fine pitch, some have convex or concave seats depending on polarity so you'll need both types

I just bought a roll of brake pipe £7 for 25ft from Partco/Unipart

I have an ordinary flaring kit, will that do for the favorit brake pipes, whilst changing a mounting one of them nasped off and it does not look like a normal flare shape its kind of like a UFO shape at the tip, will a normal flare work anyways?

You need to be able to make both kinds of flares as Tom has said. While I was making the pipes for the rally car obviously I didn't use standard routes and changed to stainless braided hoses, the ends were mostly as they would be anyway.

Got a pic of the UFO?

"Car Mechanics" magazine did a recent test of brake pipe flairing tools . They found that the really cheap ones were very intermittent in getting good quality flares . Some times O.K. , some times scrap. If you can take the old pipes to a motor factor who does brake pipes , they will makeup and flare to suit your sample.

No it is not convex or concav,it is both together, starts off as a convex then goes into a concave, like a UFO,so no tools to make it, Damb it!

Ok on the internet it says its called a ISO flare or a bubble flare and it turns out you can use a normal double flare to make one

I've got a sykes pickavant flare maker. It wasn't cheap (about £90), but it is AMAZING. Proper tool. And when you're talking brakes.....
