Buying my next Octy...

Featured Replies

I've got a 54 reg 2 litre TD PDi Elegance which I bought 18 months ago with 95k on the clock. Now with 110k, I love the car but have had a lot of problems with the engine management system (limp mode, loss of power etc). I'm going to buy another one, but with a low mileage in the hope of avoiding a repeat. My questions, therefore, is what engine to get? Whilst I love the performance of the 140 break engine, are the engine management issues more common on these? Would the 1.9 diesel or 1.6 or 2 litre petrol be a better bet?

Any thoughts welcome... But please don't bore me with more potential solutions to the engine management - I've already thrown 1.5k at it and the cupboard is now bare!! :)

New boy here - first post. I've got a 1.9 Ambiente that I've had for 3 months and it's excellent.

I too pondered the 2.0 / 1.9 issues before I bought. I'm a big fan of Honest John who writes a column and reviews in the Daily Telegraph Honest John. He said the 1.9 is plenty quick enough, if a little noisy on tick-over. So I followed his advice and after test drives got the 1.9. Cruises comfortably and returns 50+ to the gallon. I'm delighted.

i find when people say this is noisy, or slower its best to go and havea go for yourself as most of these reporters have AMGmercs and think they are too noisy when switched off.

Have you considered the 1.8 TFSI engine, supposed to be a good engine, but if your doing miles the diesels will just cruise forever as you know. The 1.9 TDi will likely get a little more mpg, and similar power if you get it remapped. And it shouldn't be long till the new common rail diesel engine in supply.
