Hole in Engine of Octavia 1.9tdi 51 plate

Featured Replies

Hello I am a new member, not at all technical but in dire need of help

I recently had the following work done to my beloved Octavia.

New Water Pump,Timing adjusted,Head removed, decoked, new valves and hydraulic tappets, after work the ABS light on dash was on permently but told by garage that they thought this was just chip fault, after this work I drove the car for 300 miles (150 on day it blew up) there was what felt like a thump ,then a loud bang, oil light came on,horrible dragging noise, then in layby oil flooded out.

What I need to know is do I have a claim against the garage?

I guess you do, it does sound like they failed to put something back together properly.

I woudl say yes, but I'd suggest you get what is left of the engine inspected by an independanat garage or the AA/RAC etc and a full written report created.

This will cost you but you won't be able to take legal action without this. Pictures of the engine and the failed/badly fitted internals will also be needed.

Your insurance co may be able to tell you where you can get such a report done. Also if you have legal cover on your insurance don't forget to use it if needed.

It sounds to me like you have something against the garage, but only a proper report and a chat to a lawyer can confirm this.

I suggest getting a report and then contacting the garage with it's findings and asking them to rectify the damage.

I would say so too.

I'm also far from impressed with a garage who would say "your ABS problem is just a chip fault" anyway. They've effectively said "it's only the most expensive part of the ABS", and I'd like to know what led them to that diagnosis, when most ABS faults are sensors!

Make sure you have the receipt from the garage.

FWIW if they didn't pay the tax on your payment to them then the inland revenue can be very good and getting even for tax evasion ;)
