Should I be worried?

Featured Replies

Hey guys,

First off, im new here, and i hate arriving somewhere new with a problem, but after lurking in the shadows for a while, i cant help but feel you might see me around more often :)

Anyway i'll cut to the chase. My Fabia (2001 1.4MPI Comfort), is making a strange whispy , gritty rattle noise, coming directly from the engine bay. I cant identify the part from which its coming as i dont know enough about engines, unfortunatly! but to remedy this, i've posted up a video on youtube.

I've read that a selection of comforts do rattle, but obviously im not sure if i should be concerned in this case.

If anyone can shed any light on things i'd be greatly appriciative.

All the best.

I think its a chain driven engine and its lost the tension. I don't think its bad for the engine, just becomes noisy over time.

Welcome to the forum

I'm sure someone will be able to give you more info soon

I'm guessing that's a cam chain issue.

can this be tightened? if so, is it big money? and yes your right it is chain driven, so it sounds like we're on the right lines! many thanks.

As far as I know, this occurs when the chain gets a bit stretched. It's not terminal and won't cause any damage, but the noise will just get worse and worse until you get the chain replaced. This job, if it's anything like replacing the belt on a 16v, would be likely to cost £250-400.

excelent, thanks for the info guys. With regards to your estimate on price, is that parts and/or labour? I really must remark on the quality of this forum, very much appriciated!

That would be all in, but I'm only guessing to be honest. I'm sure there'll be somebody on here soon who has had the job done. Good luck getting it sorted, anyway. :)
