how would you rate your 1.4 16v (100bhp)

Might just me but i don't think my fabia ia that good at going up hills.

Where i work there a few steep hills and i always end up going into 3rd or 2nd gear and it seams to struggle even if i hit the hill at over 60mph.:thumbdwn: Is it just me or is this how they are.

Eugh, petrol ;)

I love mine, but you're right, the engine works best in hight rev ranges, so third gear for hills, 4th gear up to about 35/40 mph, 5th gear for cruising at speed.

Cars usually slow down up hills

My Felly cruising at 65 will slow to about 60+ up a motorway incline and I don't normally need to downshift.

It'll pick up again quickly going downhill.

Cant really comment on the Fabia 16v as I haven't driven one for that long.

My cupra has no probs flying up them hills but that's probably because it was 202bhp and 240lb of torque. Not drove a smaller car then a 2liter for years.

Just thought that it would have a bit more gumption.

Try driving a Transit 2.5D up a hill (thats a 2.5D with no turbo)

Holding a good 65 up hill foot to floor then having to slow down cause no-one will let you overtake a lorry.

It will not pick up speed again until going downhill

It takes some good hard revving in 2nd gear when my 16V has 3 other people in the car! Erk!

The car needs to be ragged to breath properly, the economy is pretty poor for a 1.4 and the gearboxes are weak as hell, other than that the car is structurally sound.

Mine is fine going up hills, plenty of power if thirsty when it comes to oil. What exactly do you mean by weak gearboxes?

I had to change third and fourth gear synchro on mine and boxes are just hereditary for being weak and prone to failure, basically not built for the engine.

The boxes on 1.4 16V VAG cars are known for bearing failure.

Having said that, our Lupo 100BHP 16V is fine. It is true it needs a bootful of revs to perform at it's best though.

I had one and found it brilliant but it had all the power at the top end.

The wife then bought one and it had a lot more torque than mine.

I suspect that mine had been modified as I once hit 135 MPH in Germany :)

When I had my Fabia 16v (all those years ago) I was 5 up coming back from Biggin Hill air show and going up a hill and the car gradualy slowed down till it stopped. It did not have the guts to go on up the hill and it was just wearing the clutch out. In the end all my passengers had to get out and meet me at the top of the hill.
