Which Falken?

Featured Replies

Reading comments here I've decided to go for 4 Falken FK-452's from internet sellers MyTyres. However there are two types listed under 205-55-R16. One is called ZR16 91W and the other ZR16 91V.

There is only 70p difference in price, but the cheaper one, 91W, is mentioned as having a rim protector moulding which sounds useful.

Can anyone explain the difference, and which would be the better tyre.?

Just my luck the prices went up over night from about £51 to £57 unfitted.

My local fitting garage, Woodbourne, charge about £15 a corner including disposal of old tyres.

Any comments welcome.

The V and W are speed ratings. You should go with the 'W' not only for the rim protection but it's the higher speed rating

Interesting then that the slightly cheaper tyre is the better choice!

Thank you!

Probably just because they sell more of them :)

when i replaced my front pair the tyres were put from a W rating to Y rating.

Just as well you did Paul, the W's are only rated to 168mph!:rofl:

Don't get them from my tyres get them from Camskill instead... only £48!! ;) Used Camskill for mine and they were very prompt with the delivery.

Alternatively you can get the new Falkens (ZE 912) which are even cheaper. Haven't used them myself yet but have heard a few good things in a few posts.

Have a read up about them at the Falken website:

Hope that helps.

thats good then the back will have to stay at 168 and the front can then go faster  stretchy car mod anyone?

It is a 2.0 though ;)

But not a proper one ;)

What is an improper 2.0 litre?

Any car that isn't a fabia that contains a 2.0 engine ;)

Oh dear. There's an awful lot of improper cars around then.

Does the government know about this?

.................In fact, does the government know about anything?

Now I'm confused.

I have decided to change to Falken 452 at the end of this summer, wanting to get better grip and low roadnoise, over my existing Dunlops. Now I see on the Falken's site that beside 452 they have two more versions.

What do we know about them concerning roadnoise?

Thanks

no its 1998cc:rofl:

Well I've heard the ZE512 have pretty poor grip from a few other guys on here so probably best to steer clear.

The 452 on my Mk 1 vrs seem to be pretty quiet and provide pretty good grip in the wet and dry.

As for the ZE912 I don't know but I'm gonna put them on SWMBOs car to test them out so I'll tell you in a few months!! :D

Well my FK-452s go on at 2pm today. A bit of scrubbing in I suppose, then I will be extremely interested to compare and contrast, as they say.

I can't really fault the Bridgestone Turanza originals except for road noise, over 25000 miles and probably another couple of thousand in them still.

And as yet I don't really know if the noise is them or the car, but there is still an enormous difference when I run onto that new motorway surfacing material they use. It's almost as if the engine has switched off.

Thanks for that, keep us updated.

i found to take it easy for about 200 miles then find a nice back road to scrub them on. let me know how your brakes feel after wards too as i be interested in that too.

I'd give it a few hundred dry miles before pushing on as you will notice they are very easy to break traction, especially in the damp until the release coating is gone.

Maybe put 500 miles on and then have the fronts and rears swapped give it a few more miles and then see what you think :)

I'm Furious!

Tyres fitted, drove home, they felt great, quiet, nice handling even this new.

I cleaned all the fitting lubricants etc off the wheels and what do I find?

Umpteen bl**dy great scratches, some more like gouges, running across several spokes, about an inch from the rim and parallel to it.

Three wheels affected, both the fronts are the worst.

I phoned up straight away, went back and showed young manager the damage. He said the boss has to see it Monday but I got a note off him manager to say it was seen right after fitting.

What do I do, apart from blow the place up?

Should I demand new wheels? I haven't seen what alloy repairs come up like.

Even if they get new OEM wheels, should I let them take these new tyres off and put them on the new ones or demand NEW new tyres already on so I just have the wheels swapped over?
