1.4 tsi...?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

The new Superb is about to be released here in Denmark in september and the entry model is the 1.4 TSI with 125bhp and 200nm at 1500 rpm.

Would you think this is underpowered?

Was planning to also tow a camper (...is it called this?) on holidays.

Know the next model 1.8 TSI proparly would be better but the price diff is also noticeable.

Would it be possible to have it remaped and if so what could be the outcome?

Bgds Dan

Dan, a small petrol engine is about the worst option if you are going to tow an appreciable distance. If local taxation and fuel cost conditions allow it, buy a diesel - there's absolutely no comparison when it's really well loaded.

rotodiesel.

Got to agree with rotodiesel 100%.

I've driven the new Audi A4 with the 1.8TSI 160 engine, and it felt very underpowered. In the Superb (which is even heavier), it's going to make towing very heavy going.

Do not have a 1.4TSi as a towbar, you'd be better off with the 1.9TDi or better yet with a 2.0TDi 140bhp.

Have to agree. If you a looking at towing with a petrol, then a V6 is probably the minimum. Diesel is the only option really.

Thanks for the replies.

Have concidered the diesel but my daily drive to work is approx. 8 km each way. Will these short distances kill the diesel?

My Fabia is turning 1 year this september and has currently driven 11800 km......!

The main consideration would be the DPF, which is standard on all the new diesel Superbs.

These filters need to get up to temperature in order to regenerate. Your daily commute sounds like it might not be long enough to allow this to happen, and hence the filter could become clogged.

As long as you ensure that you make at least a couple of journeys a month which allow the filter to reach regeneration temperature, then I think you'd be okay.

It should be mentioned that the filter is not covered by the warranty, so if you knacker it, you'll have to pay to replace it.

As your questions are answered above, give another view.

If you only drive 16km/10 miles per day, why not either get an old car for the daily drive, or go by bicycle. With the amount of distance you drive a year, is it really worth buying a new superb?

Also why not go for an old shape superb or a mk2 Octavia second hand? Either of thise would be just as good for towing a caravan with the right engine, and not being new, it would save you cash when buying it too.

What is the weight of what you intend to tow? Is it a caravan, or a trailer tent?

Dan everyone is right a 1.4 tsi is not the vehicle for you a oil burner is the way forward with regards to the dpf the engine ecu will do it's best to ensure regeneration is carried out if it can't do it the dpf light will come on telling you it needs a bit of assistance providing when this happens you carry out the correct drive cycle as explained in the owners manual you will have no problem !!

The weight of the caravan is about 1350-1400 kg.

I know the sensibel thing to do would be to buy something else perhaps second hand but who want to be sensibel......:D

The reason for a new car is that my Fabia almost can´t tow anything. Believe me if it could I would keep it. I am very pleased with it that is why I want a Skoda again.

How long do you have to drive to get the filter up in temp? I know it depends on the outside temp but roughly.

The 105 bhp diesel is it the one that is very popular to tune?

Bgds Dan

I'd say you would be better off trading in your Fabia for an Octavia as a towcar, I don't think you need the Superb if you are happy with the size of your Fabia.

It is the design of the Superb I really like. Was actually considering an Octavia untill the Superb came along.

Octavia Scout won a Towcar award in its weight division this year in teh Caravan Clubs Towcar of the Year 2008 tests

2008 winners - ?koda Octavia Scout TDI

Your caravan weight 1350-1400kg, and you tow with a Fabia? Thats a dangerous mismatch if your figures are right.

No no I don´t tow a caravan with my Fabia. I think it can tow 800 kg...............

We are planning to buy a caravan so therefor the Fabia has to go..:thumbdwn:

In that case, I really would consider the Scout. It'll do all you ask and more. I think its only available in an estate so you've got bags of room. And its a towing monster for its size.

I do think the new Superb needs a V6 diesel. The 2.7 would be grand from the Audi A6 range. I'm sure those cars are not fitted with the damned DPF.

The 2.7TDi is only 180bhp but does have more torque, I think on paper it would probably appear to similar to drive as the CR 170BHP and possibly wouldn't sell. The 3.0TDi V6 (233bhp) however, is an amazing engine and would make a excellent range topper in the Superb.

Is that the same engine thats in the Phaeton? As well as Audi A6/8

Yeah that's right. The A6/A8 does have a DPF on it though, but no problems with it as far as I know. They manage to cram it into the Audi A4 somehow aswell.

But it is a very expensive engine to produce and it probably wouldn't fit in a Superb as the engine is sitting the wrong way round but it sure would be cool.

Is it the same engine that is used in the Golf where is produces 170 bhp?

It is indeed. Sold my 2nd in a row Superb 4 weeks ago (5 and a half years of trouble free motoring) and took delivery of a new Phaeton 2 weeks later. Just finished running it in and it's an excellent car and the engine is a marvel.

Even so, still have very fond memories of the old Superb. Hope the new one turns out to be winner, but the September delivery date was just too late for me.
