Replace one tyre or both?

Featured Replies

Hi,

My rear tyre needs to be replaced due to a punchure. My question is, my other rear tyre still has around 10,000 miles left before it needs replacing - am I OK to put a new tyre on the rear and leave the existing one on, or should I replace both? I assume I am going to have to get the same make/model if I replace just one?

Thanks

Hi,

Having worked in the service department at a local garage I always advised replacing tyres in axle sets. So when replacing one, replace the other. Of course when it comes to a situation like you have then it seems a waste of money to replace a tyre that doesnt really need it. Whats the spare tyre like? Is it new? The tyre thats punctured, is there no way it can be plugged?(is the puncture too close to the sidewall) Whats the tyre tread depths like?

Try work out the best combination to see what works out best and makes the most of the tyres you have, including the spare. That way it saves you spending more money than you need.

Regards

if your spare is unused, buy one new tyre, put the spare tyre on the other road wheel, putting the part worn tyre on the spare in the boot.

It's still servicable so is good for a spare, and you only have to buy one new tyre.

hope this helps.

Thanks, this is what I have decided to do. I wanted Proxies all-round however I think I will go this route instead - its far cheaper!
