Returned to my car today from shopping and find what drivers side of my wing mirror :(

Bad bits:- the colour coded shell is smashed, with nicely matches the shattered mirror glass and really compliments the matt black plastic bit of which half appears to be missing (had to be the bit with the part number didn't it )!

Good bits:- the electrics are still working, no further damage to the car and the mirror arm (sticking out of the door) looks fine.

The misses then points outs to me "I think this is a good time to mention, as any, I clipped the mirror the other day!"

Anyhow life goes on - now for the fixing!

I've read quite a few threads on here about how other cars in the VAG family should be able to donate some mirrors to the cause, however I don't see any threads about successful fitting other mirrors.

I'm gathering the part numbers I need for an original fix but can anyone say, hand on heart (:P), that other VAG mirrors would fit?

A local dealer said £26 for the primed skin, which isn't the end of the world, but after the cost getting it sprayed well - kinda makes used alternatives on fleaBay look more interesting.

I don't want to have indicators in the mirrors, but I do still want to be able to move and heat them electrically.

I'm sure I've seen some smaller VWs with a smaller passenger side wing mirror compared to the drivers side - which wouldn't be too bad.

Why dont you just buy the skin, a can of paint/laquer and do the job yourself. If you take your time the results should be excellent.

Do you apply lacquer the same way you do the paint - is there a special technique?

Spray it before fitting it.

Where abouts was this? Which town at least. My girlfriend told me today she clipped someones wing mirror earlier when shopping, but reckons that it popped back into place and there was no damage..

Someone I know got a replacement cover on ebay and it was ready sprayed I think. This was for a golf, but I would imagine they probably do other VAG cars as well. Don't have the details but PM if you want and I can try and find out.
