MK3 Golf GTi, what to do?

I have been offered this car. It belonged to my apprentices brother. My apprentice can't get insurance on it so has loaned it to me to give it the once over and see what it needs. It's got around 140k on the clock but actually drives really well. Plan is to get it into work and give it the once over and see what it needs for the MOT. The bodywork isnt great, bit of laquer peeling, few dents and its tornado red but I am being a little picky, its not as young as it used to be.

So here is where I have to decide what to do. Fix it up, MOT it and get it looking nice and sell on or fix it up and keep it, or justnot bother and let a MK3 die.

You've already got a golf mk2 havnt you so maybe you could sell it on and have a bit of cash for that elusive mod

I reckon you might be surprised how little needs doing to get an MOT, and the car itself seems in reasonable nick for a 14 year old car. :cool: I wouldn't let it die (just yet ;))

I dont really intend on keeping it, just more if I can be bothered to repair it and sell it. Hmm spare 1.8T in the unit, but then I already have one 1.8T project on the go.

Never having seen under the bonnet of one before can I say - WTF? Is that a 2.0 non-crossflow 8V engine.

I thought it was only the diesels that retained that config.

If you had a spare turbo, you could try for a rear mount. Lots of pipes and faffing around required for a 5-7PSI boost. Though at 140-150bhp(iish) it might be more deserving of the GTI tag.

Best option I think is fix up, clean up and sell on. Anything interesting you do with it will bump the insurance anyway.

Hmm I have the whole engine. Or rather Bengie does, but its in my unit and I have the key mwhah ha ha ha ha.

But yes a large majority of the MK3 Golf GTi's were the 2.0 8V and its a whole lot better than the MK4 crossflow POS.

Sound advice I think. I could even do the right thing and help my apprentice fix it up if he is keen enough and help him sell it thus getting him more funds for a more suitable motor.

It looks in fair condition with no damage evident so it would be a shame

no to get it cleaned up and MOT'd. :)

As with the above, I reckon do the minimum to get it mechanically sound, then detail it. Seeing as there are no obvious issues on the outside, a good clay/polish/wax should see it looking good I reckon. :)

IIRC, this engine also found it's way into the MkIV Golf "GTi". IMHO, that was the most undeserving of the Golfs seeing as the MkIV is even heavier than this one.

1060Kg isn't exactly heavy, 115bhp would be enough for now and stripped out would be pretty light. perfect for us :)

no they are totally different in the mk4, the mk4 has an internal water pump, rather than the belt driven one on the mk3, the mk4 has distributorless ignition too, and a better crossflow cylinder head

We shall see tomorrow when I have a look over it for MOT.

The body isnt perfect, laquer is peeling on a pillars, rust hole in tailgate under window, dent in o/s/r 1/4 panel and a few bad scratches, take more than a detail. However it depends on what you want to do with it. Its sound eoung not to fall apart anytime soon.

My mistake. :) The newer version is still 115bhp I think though?
