timing chain done!!! should i now do valve clearances

Featured Replies

well i finally have a day off now after the debacle in getting my water pump and timing chain done.

would it be worth doing the valve clearances again?

what do people set them too. haynes says 0.25 / 0.2 skoda say 0.25 each way, ive seen threads on here saying 0.2 each way. whats the concensus on this?

thanks all,

gav

There's no obvious reason for checking the clearances again. If they're wrong it affects the valve closing and/or cam timing, but the cam timing doesn't affect the clearances.

thanks, but for future reference, what should the clearances be set too? because right now, what ever they are ive gone form "tractor-ish" engine to a smooth as silk quieter than my neighbours 16v 3yr old honda! (thanks timing chain!)

make a 0,2 distance , and remember to set it on cold engine

I don't agree, it is recommended to do after replacing chain

The people who make this recommendation also claim that G12 antifreeze and 75W90EP gear oil last forever, and I don't believe those claims either!

Do you want to try and convince me that the timing chain has a major effect on cam timing, because that would affect where the clearances are greatest?

the timming belt controls the timming, the clerance control the valve opening ratio, its not a bad thing to check and put up to specs, i would recommend 0.2mm on the intake, a little less on the exhaust (always a little less on the exhaust) and if it feels like they sound a little then change the oil, those cams are good at telling you when the oil is thinning another great thing to check is spark plug spacing and ignition timming, by doing this you can go from a diesel like sound to the nices purr :)
