Internal light problem

Featured Replies

Hi

Has anyone had a problem with their internal light not coming on when you open the door? I can get the light to come on permanently with the switch pushed fully to one side, and to stay off completely with it pushed fully to the other side. But I can't get the light to come on when the door is opened.

I'm ironing out all the problems that came with this car one by one. First the oil pressure warning light (faulty pressure switch - just £10 DIY repair) then the PAS (faulty angle sensor - £70 DIY repair). Now its time to sort out the light! thanks for all the help

That probably indicates an issue with the switch, which is located in the door lock.

Does the inerior light work properly off the other door, and does the red light in the door trailing edge work with the door open?

Thanks for the quick reply. The light doesn't work off any door at all. I have not noticed a door trailing edge... what exactly is that? It doesn't sound like the sort of thing my W-reg Fabia Classic would have!

Cheers

The trailing edge of a door is the back one. I dunno about W reg or Classic trim, but all my neighbours' Furbies have these lights.

That said, if the light doesn't work wit either front door, I'd suspect either the light switch in that position, or the delay module if applicable.

Thanks - so I should have a look at the switch itself and also the delay module. What is the delay module and how do I get to it and check it out?

Cheers for all the advice and help

I don't know exactly what the delay module, if present, would look like, but it's the unit that fades out the interior light if you've got one. I'd expect it to be up beside the switch and bulb, so if there's an electronics box up there that should be what it is.

Thanks - I'll try and have a look. Cheers.

Anyone else had this problem?

Thanks

Take the unit out and hand a multimeter over the switch contacts.

You will then be able to see what happens when in the door position and if it is giving contact or open circuit.

If it shows contact then I'd be looking at the switches etc.

Cheers cheezemonkhai. When you say you'd be looking at the switches etc, can you explain a bit more of what you mean? If there is a problem with the door lock, how do I check that out?

The light switches on VAG cars are normally built into the lock mechanisms.

Cheers... so any suggestions on how I should check out those switches in the lock mechanisms?

I mean hook a multimeter up to the switch in the headlining and make sure it provides a contact across two of the pins when in the door open position.

IIRC there are 3 pins, I guess always on, always off are open and closed, one is gound and the door will hook up to the third pin to take a signal from the door lock switches.

So take the light and switch out and check that in the on and off and doors position you get what you expect from the switch in the light.

If you do then start looking at other things. For example if you have the red lights in the bottom of your door cars, see if they light up when you open a door. If they don't the car thinks it's closed.

If the car has remote central locking plip it open, open a front door and wait 15 seconds. If the car relocks then you know that door switch isn't happy.

Also does the flashing red LED in the drivers door come on ok when the car is locked?

Thanks for the reply. It's only a W-reg Classic so doesn't have remote locking, no flashing red LED and no red lights in bottom of the doors!

I'll try and have a look at the light and switch itself.

"So take the light and switch out and check that in the on and off and doors position you get what you expect from the switch in the light." I am being dumb, but can you explain a bit more about this? I'm not sure I should be checking for and how to do it when I have taken the light and switch out. Sorry!

(I tried taking the light and the switch out this morning and it was an absolute pain in the neck to get back in and as a result the connections aren't as firm as they were before!)

It just pushes so shouldn't be hard.

IIRC on the classic you don't get the nice fad up/down effect either it's just on or off but i could be wrong on that.
