Vista Sleep Mode

Featured Replies

Hello,

My laptop (Vista) now seems to refuse to 'sleep' when it is plugged in but is Ok when on battery, has anybody had this happen and is there a way to get it back?

It's just annoying as I tend to need to use it any time so it's easier to bring it out of sleep than keep shutting down and restarting.

Thanks in advance,

Ben

Not seen this happen myself, but have trawled through all the Power profile options, within Control Panel?

Sounds like it's gone to an 'always on' mode when on the mains, or something similar.

My exposure to Vista and laptops is limited at the moment mind, as I still run XP on mine and we've not yet adopted it at work.

Cheers,

Steve

As above, check your power profiles...

EG if your laptop gets set to "high performance" when on mains it will not go to sleep.

I keep my PC in balanced mode, just means it throttles the various power saving features :)

I *really* do like the adaptive screensaver/sleep mode though.. works like a charm

Had a look at the power settings as it's always on the mains and it was in high performance, so I set it to balanced and now it's fine.

Balanced seems O.K., what does it throttle down to save power then as opposed to high performance as I can't say I've noticed a difference when surfing the interweb etc?

Is the high power for when you are playing games etc, as I think I'll just leave it in balanced

Got to say, I do like the sleep mode!

My laptop must have a coma setting. Its goes blank whilst still on but refuses to wake up. No amount of button pressing raises it. Usually have to press the power button for 5 secs to kill it. not good. :thumbdwn:

Maybe I should use this sleep feature instead of just closing it and/or leaving it for hours.

Thanks!

Naa, the high performance mode just keeps everything on and spinning with no power savings, ie it keeps the cpu running at 100% speed, pci-e lanes active, hard drives spinning etc etc all uses extra electricity.

In balanced mode it shuts parts of your computerdown that you are not using, like spare PCI-e lanes.

you wouldnt notice a difference in day to day useage as in balanced mode it will throttle and power things up as required to match your usage :)

If you click on the advanced or edit section in the power properties you can see all the bits and bobs that actually are controlled by the various power modes. :)

Yes, and stop making it wear your contact lenses :rofl:
