Weight of OEM vrs wheels

Featured Replies

I note when upgrading alloys basic ideas are make sure they are light and well made and not too large.

Though does anyone know the weight of vrs 16" OEM wheels.

Also if we take identical make and model tyres one 205/45/16 another 205/40/17 is one lighter? :-)

You're right about trying to keep the unsprung weight down - one of the biggest killers of performance is that. Forged ones tend to be the best if you're going bigger, but they tend to be expensive. Personally I think anything greater than 17's is excessive. Lower the car if you want less of a gap in the arches.

In terms of tyres, I'd say the 17's are more likely to be lighter. They're a lower profile meaning less rubber. But, in these instances you have bigger rims so the overall weight is likely to be higher as there's more metal going round instead of rubber/ air. ;)

Just had a search OEM 16's weigh in at 9kg's without tire, 18kg's with tire

My vRS wheels aint light when you have to take them off,

Alloy wheels arn't that light really, common misconsepition....alloy wheels will weigh more than steel wheels as they use more material to make them as strong as steel ones.

Before anybody rubbishes this, weigh the same size wheels....

I would say that the 45/16's would be lighter as they will use more steel in the 40/17's to reinforce them.
