dunno never sat on the seats in a mk1. and have yet to see a mk2 that would handle, steer, brake, look, sound, etc better than my mk1.

I can throw mine into a corner and get the rear end to step out in extreme circumstances

(Brisky run) :)

I though said that you wouldnt get rid Gerry?

Will have to think about it at some time, as it will not last for ever, I have never in my life kept a car for more than two years, and having had the Octy vRS from new, it is seven years old in August, and still looks good, and still brings a smile to my face, also there is no point is trying to sell it, as for what I would get for it, I might as well give it away.

MALC:- I already have a a nice pair of Aigle boots for walking, but, sorry all cars do not depreciate the way Skodas do, as others from the VAG group hold their price much better than these do, and to look in our local rag, Golf's hold their price much better for their year than Octys do.

Just ask any of the Mk1 & Mk2 Octy owners on here what trade in/sale values they were offered against what they paid in the first place, and just look at the ridiculously low prices the Mk1's are going for now, if they can sell them?

Several very tidy examples of the Mk1 Octy vRS have been advertised on here, and not even had one serious offer, then they go to Pistonheads and Autotrader with the same negative results.

A Skoda is still a Skoda in most people's eyes with all the humour/comments/jokes that the name attracts.

It is getting better, but will take years to lose that stigma, it is a good investment if you buy it, and intend to keep it until it falls to bits, but if you intend to sell it/trade it after a couple of years, you will lose a lot of money.

The mk1 was lighter which made it more nimble. Looking at the stats there is little to chose in terms of performance. Which would I have? Mk1. Drove a modded mk2 and it didn't give me a buzz like a modded mk1 did. It may be a better cruiser but having done over 140k miles in a mk1 in less than 3 years it didn't do too badly :D

At the end of the day, Mk1 or Mk2, its still a Skoda, and values will depreciate like a brick and residual values will make it worth nothing in two or three years from purchase.

This is already being seen on here with the sales of Mk1's and Mk2's.

I love my modded Mk1, and in my humble opinion the Mk1 has more to offer the tuner, but, would I buy another Skoda when this ones needs to be changed?............................"NO"

I hope you don't work in the trade, I assume you don't from your comment. Skoda Octavia (all models) are on par with Audi as far as residuals go. If you would like to experience awful residual values I suggest you go and see Citroen and buy a £40k C6 that'll be worth £6,000 in 3 years.

My MK1 L&K 1.8T back to back with a customer's MK5 Golf (same platform as the MK2 Octavia) I cannot say which is better. The Mk1 octy in looks is a lot better imho. Golf 5 dash not very nice either, prefer sitting in the L&K. However driving, both very tight. A bit less trim creaks etc in the newer platform, it feels very solid. Steering is more like an astra, willing to turn in where the mk1 feels very competent but not that willing to turn in on corners, prefers going straight. However that's at a price the suspension is stiffer feeling and you get more movement over the bumps which can get annoying in the later platform. My wife was a bit ill and felt more sick in the later platform, the mk1 octy rode better.

NEITHER of them rode as well as the mk1 octavias (and B5 passats as well) which have 15" wheels and 195 tyres. Which says a lot to me about how important tyres are in smoothing out tram lines and small bumps. The suspension on the later platform is, overall, better - but it still can't really compensate for low profile tyres and still jiggles around.

Overall, when cruising the earlier platform is maybe better. If throwing it into a corner, the later platform.

As for the rear suspension, the mk1 is just fine. Back to back, there is a bit less of a 'thud' when over pot holes on the later platform, it's a bit better control at the back. But as said, the back doesn't do much on a FWD and even in this day and age a simple H frame rear provides a good comprimise between handling, ride and simplicity.

I haven't driven a mk1 with a good rear anti roll bar, but I feel that with one (and from the reports on here) it can probably turn into corners as fluidly as the later platform.

Looking at it, the main benifit from the later platform that I can see is stiffer better controled front lower arms - cast not pressed - and better, bigger bushing.

Greg.

Mk1 is better because I own one, and I don't own a Mk2.

I would question why you are looking at residuals? Given the fact you kept the MK1 for seven years, I'd be tempted to say I couldn't give a damn about the residuals if I like a car that much I am gonna keep it for 7years as opposed to my usual '2 years and change'.

It is true that people are not going to buy a MK1 anymore, the shape has been around for almost 10 years, so the appeal/glamour has gone. But that is what is great about the MK1, it has been around for so long and it is that great that you still see them on the street and that people still want to invest into it by tuning it. And they are getting cheap! Rock on!

The MK2 is much more civilised, too middle-class and hence the price is in line with the VAG price policy: over-pricing and marketed at the more abled consumer. I bought my MK1 back in may and had the option to buy a MK2. But the MK1 is so much more alert and offers more fun, more bang for your bucks... I don't want a car that is safe, predictable, I want the raw feelings you had in the 205 GTI back in the 80's, the R5 GT Turbo's. I want to see passion here :), not an assurance that I am civilised.

Oh and concerning those people that make jokes about the logo, name, well f0ck'um as they are looking at a badge rather than a reliable car. Those people will probably buy a Golf and do not understand what it means when we say 'share platform'. I work hard for my pennies so I want a reliable and cheap car that will allow me to put my money in enjoying myself, not pay some sort of suit wearing marketeer a new pair of designer gucci glasses.

Now I get to spend my pennies on mods and holidays.

i'm not saying simply because i own as i know you love to try and wind up 4x4 owners(me especially) but you always compare any octavia to yours, have you ever driven a 4x4 octavia modified to the same extent as your vRS was?

Cos it's FUN

(and my neighbour says it looks like a shark. WTF???? )

i hope you dont work in the trade cos you are fking clueless..

feeling a bit lairy tonight are we?! haha

anyway. this thread is pointless! it's a "matter of opinion". three words that save so many anguments!

And we all know what opinions are like don't we ;)

It seems that the consensus in this thread that the that the mk1 is a better motor than the 2

but

The mk1 looks old and is showing its age style wise

Thats my view and i dont own an octy and i never intend to buy one

So an impartial view

i prefer the looks of the mk1, mk2 looks over inflated.

To be fair, this was asked in the Octavia I section... The response may well be different elsewhere on the site.

...I might as well give it away...

dibs :D

i prefer the looks of the mk1, mk2 looks over inflated.

In terms of looks in hatch form I'd tend to agree... in Estate mode however I think the MKII looks the business, far better than the MKI VRS in Estate form.

But I would say that as I have a MKII Estate

i agree, the mk1 vrs estate looks proper rough but a mk1 4x4 estate, now thats a beauty to behold :D

They are two different cars really and only share the name (I'm assuming hardly any components are shared between the two other than the odd part here and there).

Comparing them is a bit pointless as their development is so far apart in terms of time that you would expect them to be different in character and ethos.

Having been in both the Mk1 and MKII, the MkII did leave me a bit cold in terms of any character and I'm still wondering what to get when/if my Mk1 vRS has to go.:(

don't think they share any bits.

don't think they share any bits.

Ko3 I think although it''s probably mounted different.
