I wouldn't say they're better...

You get a lot of car for your money with the Mk1, it also (IMHO) looks more aggressive than the mk2.

The Mk2 is finished to a higher standard and feels more substantial IMO.

If you want performance then I think the Mk1 is better. I believe it's lighter, and with the difference in price, you could make it into a bit of a monster for Mk2 money.

As an all rounder (ignoring the cost) the Mk2 has more space, more comfortable seats. I am led to believe the handling is better in standard from than the Mk1, although the only Mk2's I've driven have been police spec, so I can't say for certain.

I wouldn't say the mk1 is better than the mk2 but imo i think the mk1 looks better than the mk2

The Mk1 is just available with more off-the-shelf tuning at this point. The Mk2 is catching up though, I reckon the 300bhp will be reached soon enough ;)

Styling is more aggressive

Better tuning options (so far)

Cheap for what it is

Decently sized

:)

Ive just picked up my Octi from the dealers after having cruise retro fitted. All today ive had a loan car which was a mk2 1.9 tdi octi. The difference I noticed most of all was the brakes, they are much stronger on the mk2. Also it felt more planted and solid handling.

I still love my mk1 though:D

LOL, you think :P

At the end of the day, Mk1 or Mk2, its still a Skoda, and values will depreciate like a brick and residual values will make it worth nothing in two or three years from purchase.

This is already being seen on here with the sales of Mk1's and Mk2's.

I love my modded Mk1, and in my humble opinion the Mk1 has more to offer the tuner, but, would I buy another Skoda when this ones needs to be changed?............................"NO"

I know my car may be worth next to nothing financially but I bought it like most of my previous cars with my heart rather than my head. I love fast cars and 4x4's and although like smoking, drinking, living a life, etc, etc they are becoming socially unacceptable I will never change my ethos.

Simply I love the MK1 for the way it looks and goes  MK2 is a great car but I think it could have been a little bolder with the styling, I always have to look for the V badge when I see them from the front because they just don't stand out. Back end of the MK2 is lovely though an area that the MK1 falls short IMO

I agree with you there Lex

This applies for ALL cars.. unless its say an Alfa 8c ;) Residuals are nothing less than what I saw with my VW Golf. Are you planning on a nice set of walking boots instead?

Love my MK1 but I am getting drawn to a MkII diesel with DSG...

I reckon the 300bhp will be reached soon enough ;)

Long since past, 350+bhp kits have been available for a whle now.

Surely the independent suspension on the back of the Octy II must count for something?

I bought a MKII because it was better than the MKI :) Simple as that :)

why the poorer handling versions of the mk1 had it.....? never made them popular....

It thought the Mk I was based on the Golf IV chassis and the GT TDi I owned didn’t have independent rear suspension.

The rear suspension does not come in to it as the car will still under steer, but it will be more predictable :)

the overweight, understeer prone, loloping chassied smaller booted 4x4's had it.... :)

You had better tell Ford and VAG as they have spent a fortune on it. :D

And still got it wrong :)

I can throw mine into a corner and get the rear end to step out in extreme circumstances

(Brisky run) :)

I though said that you wouldnt get rid Gerry?

Dont think the MK1 is better or any worse as ive olny ever driven mine. Driven the old dears MK2 Leon and if its like that then id say that the MK1 is better as you feel more connected at lower speeds as the Leon didnt come alive until you hit 60mph

I drove a Mk1 and a MkII VRS back to back in standard form..... the MKII was leagues ahead in terms of refinment, pace and build quality.

the overweight, understeer prone, loloping chassied smaller booted 4x4's had it.... :)

That’s cheating:P
