Aircon advice please

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I have had my AC recharged/serviced (Kwik-fit). Drove away and blowing warm air through. Took it back a couple of weeks later (today) and they recharged it again. The machine they use reports no leaks and the system was still charged.

Both fans at the front of the car are running when the A/C is on, I also notice that the revs go slightly higher as expected. So everything appears to be functioning.

However still no nice cold air?

Is there any checks I can do myself? Where is the best place to take it for something like this? I am based in Newbury Berks (where there happens to be a Skoda dealer) reluctant to take it there though if I am honest.

Thanks in advance

Phil

Climatonic? Climatic? Basic AC?

Need a fault code check this could indicated an electrical problem, does the clutch cut in? What engine do you have?

A little more info would work wonders.

Sounds like your pump is not engaging, lift your bonnet, start the engine & put the climate control into auto on a low temp eg. 18, now look at the front of the aircon pump, (it's under the alternator on the L/H/S as you look at the front of the car) check that the black clutch on the front is spinning, (don't forget to keep all loose objects & hands etc clear of all moving parts whilst looking);). If it's not turning, try swaping from auto to econ a few times & see if it will kick in. Also check all fuses & conections are ok.

Hope this helps

Thanx for the info FOZ1 i will have a look as suggested.

Lummox, the car is an 02 RS, 1.8t with Climatronic.

Cheers,

Phil

If the clutch is staying still and not spinning have a look down the left hand side of the battery where the starter motor is. Clipped in above the starter motor is a four pin connector. Check the connector for broken/corroded connections, this is the wiring for the compressor.

Right i followed FOZ1's advice - clicked ECON on and off a few times then put it back on Auto and it got nice and cold! However not sure what I am looking at under the bonnet?? I guess this is not a permanent fix?

I would think the clutch is probably sticking then, see how it goes.

cancel that, just went back out and tried it again - its not coming out cold at all now... :/ The econ on and auto on trick worked once!

Not sure if the clutch is spinning (don't know wat I am looking for) can anyone mark it on a pic? Ta

You really do not wanna see the bill for getting the a/c compressor replaced :(

Am I looking in the right place?

It's not that bad, if you use an air con specialist, and not a VAG main stealer (one place where the term is justified is the air con, other than the control panel and mixer box).

I would put it down to the aircon pressure switch? get it plugged into a code reader asap

Hope this works. Use in conjunction with my first post.;)

Right the arrow is pointing to the front pully of the aircon pump, if you look at the front,(the bottom pully in 2nd pic) it should be spinning if the pump is working.

Also the green wire at the back is part of a conection that runs from the clutch at the front, make sure that both of the wires are ok no splits etc.

Hope this makes things a bit less muddy for you.:D:thumbup:

Not often the switch, although a switch fault will be logged if the pressure is low.

  • 2 weeks later...

Could this be a stuck flap motor, sounds similar to what I had.

A VAG COM flap reset sorted me out.
