vRS - pulling to the right?

Featured Replies

Hi people, bought a 'new' 05 vRS, this week, 35000 miles in good condition. On fast acceleration only the car pulls to the right - which in the UK is towards the center of the road.

Only does it on a level road, doesn't do it on a hill, only does it sometimes. Doesn't do it when accelerating, er, 'normally'.

Car just had new disks and pads, so they're ok, and it doesn't happen on braking. Have yet to pull the tyres off and have a look, though.

Any clues? Feels like that torque-steer thing, but over to one side only all the time.

Could be tracking, or torquesteer.

You arent booting it from low revs are you?

No, second and third gear, from about 2500 rpm up - overtakes and so on..

Must be the only one here, all the rest seem to pull to the left.

May seem like a dumb question, but did you check all the obvious stuff

tyre pressures

warped wheel

wheel-bolts & torques

matching tyres on same axel

directional tyres on the correct side?

Tyre pressures are ok, will pull the wheels off tomorrow. Thanks, guys.

Maybe look at the wear level on the front tyres, if one side is less worn it will have a slightly larger circumference and will move the car further than a slightly smaller one on the other side - I noticed this once when putting a brand new spare on after a puncture. Hope this helps, could be an easy fix.

Another possibility is that the console bush on the drivers side is broken/weakened and when you accelerate or decelerate, the wheel moves backwards/forwards, meaning that the two wheels are driving at slightly different angles. Do a search for "console bushes" or "console bush" if you think that this may be a problem. A way of checking is:

a) Apply handbrake and ensure car is out of gear

B) Grab each wheel firmly with two hands and rock it clockwise and anticlockwise, note the amount of movement forwards and backwards relative to the wheel arch.

If the amount of movement on both sides is equal, this is probably not your problem. If one side moves more than the other, it may well be the cause of the symptoms you describe

It's official. The tyres were on back to front.

Or rather, the fronts were worn, swapped them for the nearly new rears, problem gone. New Michelins at £106 a corner on the way.

Thanks peeps.

I thought you should never, ever swap rear tyres to go on to the front, as they wear flat rather than rounded as the front ones normally do?

Thought it was more to do with the fact that understeer is easier to cope with than oversteer?

I thought it was because they wear "square on" to the wall of the tyre, so the grip is good to a point and then viciously and dangerously "lets go", causing an accident.

The vRS owner's manual says swap rears to front every 10,000 miles. But not diagonally. So did the Tyre Guy who knew the car..

The vRS owner's manual says swap rears to front every 10,000 miles.

So it does, I therefore stand corrected :)

I think it should say 'turn them inside out' to get the best out of them. Nobody uses the insides....

I had the back tyres put to the front I was told they wont do them diagonally though that was at an Ats depot did the change for nothing as well and couldnt fault their service offered to pay they said there is no charge, Pretty good that I thought this day and age, In rip of Britain

Yes, that's good. My tyre guy charged a tenner, which with the temp at 27C here, I thought was worth every penny to stop me heaving jacks around. ( I did take the plastic caps off myself :-) )

I think they don't do diagonal swaps because the tyres are unidirectional.
