VRS smoking and whistling.

Featured Replies

as far as the whilstle being at low revs, could be to do with the variable vane turbo?! I heat a whoosh when I initially hit the accelerator but this disappears at high revs but the car still pulling.

Don't forget on the newer BLT engines they run higher levels of EGR. This reduces combustion temperatures and in the process can produce more particulates.

Never new that, thanks, surely though if I remove the EGR (as planned with the allard egr replacement pipe) I will not have to worry about this problem...

Have you tried putting the OEM filter back in as the GC one might not be a perfect fit.

I did try putting the original back in, but no change. thanks.

Will see what the dealer says... so people thing the EGR vane my be sticking slightly. so We will see...

I'd just get it turned down with VAG-COM. Quick easy fix.

You would just get what turned down?

The thing is if it turns out to be the EGR whistling then it is all fine I have the Allard replacement pipe at home awaiting fitment when I get my full remap so I will live with it for a bit... but if something more impressive I will get it changed...

mine smokes and whistles too its all good

your confusing your egr valve with your variable vanes on the turbo there lol

the egr valve is the exhaust gas recirculation valve

the vane is a rod inside the turbo which moves to control boost levels

the vanes in the turbo can stick due to carbon build up which can lead to boost probs

Mine has been smoking more and more recently but now it seems to hold back when you give it a lungfull. It's OK up to say 2500, then after this the revs seem to climb realy slow even in 3rd and fourth with the boot right down.

Anybody else had this happen as i have not long had a new turbo fitted (5k ago).

It seems to whistle OK when you ask for power to start with but when you take your foot off, there seems to be no over-run whistle noise, I mean it's non existant now where it was there before?

Could it be the MAF playing up or is it something worse? Just wondered as I don't want to pay loads to get it looked at if it's happened to somebody before?

Edit: Just done some research....could it be the N75 valve playing up at all?

ok, I'm a bit worried now, my car has been making the same whistling noise for a while, around 2k (very high pitched, almost dog whistle sound) Not been too worried about it as said before, the mechanic said it was the egr valve,

Now it does it from 1300 to 2000 rpm and in all gears, all on load when lightly pressing the throttle! also i've noticed that it makes a different whistle when decelerating around 1500 rpm that sounds like a fan belt slipping but at a constant pitch!

Any ideas?

Thanks

If it's under load, that's probably just the turbo spooling and boosting and the noise afterwards is probably just the over-run from the turbo, mine does it all the time.

Turbo noise is quite high pitch as the speed if the turbo can be anywhere from 50,000 to 150,000 RPM.

I understand there to be noise from the turbo but not like this, although it sounds pretty good, its only just started to do it in the last couple of days or so!

I'll try and record it or something!
