Hi there all,

I have a VRS SE so obviously not that old... infact mine was registered on 9/6/07. so nearly 14 months old. It has done 16500 miles and has just started to produce a load of smoke on acceleration around the 1900 - 2000 rev mark in any gear. also a very high pitched whistle on first engagement of the accelerator in any gear. more so in the low 1,2 and 3rd gears...

any ideas/reasons you think for this happending???

I am not sure if there is any performance loss, but sometimes it does feel like it should really be pulling better that it does.

Am going to be acking my local dealer, but sometimes having some knoledge before chatting with dealers is normally a good thing as they do try and catch the un-initiated out with mumbo jumbo.

?turbo-related, possible boost leak. Check out the boost piping....

The parents' VRS SE with the same BLT engine in does this as well... will be interesting to see if it's a trait or if there is something wrong.

Mine whistles now and again and is very smoky but has been doing this for a wee while and it was given the all clear at the service last month as well, so might just be a trait.

like a car vacum being used outside and you are inside but can just hear the high pitched whistle / whine

smokes lots too, but i dont mind!!!

For your smoking problem I would a fuel affitive like millers.

Not if you're under warranty and suspect problems as this is specifically not recommended by skoda.

I'd suggest a new air filter to cure the smoke as the 40k air filter interval is ridiculously optimistic. New filter is about £10 and £5 to change.

You should find the smoke much reduced after the first Italian tune up.

Yes agree also air filter at that mileage i bet its really black and clogged.

The whistle i think seems normal.

I think if you change the filter every 10-20k you will notice a lot less smoke. I do mine every 10k or every variable service with a clean out in between depending on the condition of the filter.

At 40k on my MK I Octy the thing looked like a solid lump of soot. You will of course also save some fuel from doing this so that might actually pay for the extra filters.

Thanks to all of you for replying, however the filter is a green cotton jobbie and only been on the car for about 1500 miles tops. and si still very clean. so filter change will not cure the problem. I am trying to get my dealer to answer the phone these days, which is a job in the first place, without getting anyone to actually listern to your problems...

I will check out the intercooler lines and see if any leakage. If I had significant power loss I would have presumed this to be the problem however there isn't any noticable loss and just a load of smoke...

No engine management system lights up and nothing in history either so totally at loss at present.

My 2 year old 60,000 mile vRS smokes if it's booted after any period of trunding about - it's always done it and I suspect it always will. It can be a little embarassing (like today I sootied a perfectly nice SAAB driver who got quite heated about it) but it's totally normal.

Also - the whistling usually only starts after idling for a short period (sitting in a queue of traffic or at a drive-through) and it goes if you blip the throttle as I think it's the wastegate opening or something like that.

Some say its all about smoke and mirrors, all we know is if it smokes and whistles, its called the Fabia vRS.

Warm weather + fabia vrs = smoke. :thumbup:

I spoke to my local Skoda dealer about the high pitched whistle noise, apparently its the EGR valve working with the turbo, its normal according to the mechanic who test drove it when it had gearbox problems!

Cold weather, warmed up VRS engine = performance, and less smoke. I remember February!

I will be running the car in the dealers as I have got to get a set of rear wheel arch liners fitted (originals split for no reason) so will get them to listen very soon.

the thing with it the whistle is it is not under high boost pressures it occurs, so when booting it there is nothing...

The smoking I can understand, hot weather + slow motorway driving(M25)

There is always a load of soot after constant plodding along as the engine's on these VRS (and 1.9TDi from VAG) store up the rubbish and dump it in one go when booted. So this just prooves that booting the car occasonally is a good thing.

Embarassing? i fooking love it lol. Esp when theres a cabby tail gating you. :thumbup:

Spoke to the dealer and they state

"It will be a leaking Intercooler hose. We have noted in the past that some only fail at low presures. not sure why but under high pressure they seem to stop whistling"

I had to have a little chuckle at that point, its quite obvious the lines would stop whistling under higher pressures the hole that is leaking from is opened up wider so will not whistle just release more air.

Obviously if they are correct the car will be going in for a hose replacement or I am also looking at the Sparco Hose kit anyway so may just get it swapped over... I know the hoses and fitting and investiation are all covered under warranty and at no cost, but samco hoses would look great on the car...

as for smoking thats just down to the warm weather and is usual. the person that wrote the part about the soot being dumped after plodding along the motorway. I enquired about this a while back and this is due to the newer Diesels store up the soot content to make them more enviromentally friendly. however when the engine is driven hard the storage pot cant handle it and dumps the soot out. therfore after plodding and you get some **** that wants to sit on your bumper or in your boot. a swift hard reving will soon fill his radiator engine bay and ventilation system with 4 tonne of soot. and if your really lucky he will have his windows open too. just think all that soot dumped from your car, straight back into his engine. Can't be good for it... he he he

I though that the newer engines with the DPF burnt off all the soot at a required point, so there is none dumped out the back, there are various methods for doing this.

I recall there are changeable ones and ones that regenerate themselves, thus stopping all the particulate matter...or what's the point of having them on cars if it's just going to dump it anyway???

My understanding was that at certain intervals, the ECU makes the combustion/exhuast temperature higher so that the soot in the DPF can be fully combusted, meaning that it never makes it's way to the atmosphere as soot.

Of course you'll always get the soot that has collected past the DPF being chucked out when you decide to floor it, but I doubt it dumps the whole contents of the DPF :)

By the way, since I started giving my car a relatively frequent journey up to the 3000 - 3500rpm mark at least once a day, the black smoke out of the back has pretty much stopped :) It obviously does it some good.

Ours has a good cleanout over the last few weeks with the countless briskoda runs we have done but if it's not been given a run or cleanout it smokes like nothing else.

The car will be doing countless city miles for another couple of weeks before it gets a good run!

Have you tried putting the OEM filter back in as the GC one might not be a perfect fit.
