Another power steering problem

Featured Replies

Hi everyone - this is starting to drive me crazy!

I had all the usual symptoms of a faulty angle sensor (flickering lights, intermitent power steering assistance) and so, after several hours under the car, I managed to fit a new sensor.

Joy! It all worked fantastically well. No more flicker, lots of support at low speed and more feel at higher speeds.

Then, inexplicably, pulling out of Morrisons Car Park yesterday and the steering felt heavier (as if it should be at higher speed - it hadn't gone altogether) and teh warning light was back on. I couldn't believe it! The lights stayed on for my entire journey home from work, about an hours drive.

Later in teh evening I made a short journey, and the power steering this time was working fine and no warning light. Great - maybe it was just a temporary glitch.

But no - this morning the light was back on and the steering all heavy again at low speeds.

So I have fitted a new angle sensor, it obviously made the difference for two weeks, but now problems have returned. What on earth is going on!

I'd be really grateful for any advice. I'm loathe to take it to a dealership just yet since I'm worried they'll say 'a new PAS pump and several hundred ££ please'!

Hi i had this problem also, had to have the power steering pump changed, luckily enough it was still under warranty!

Have you made sure you have enough fluid in there, my car seems to drink it even though there isn't a leak!

Thanks

Hi Craig, and thanks

so you had the same problem - a steering angle sensor change solved the issue but for only a short while?

What I don't understand is why it would all work for a couple of weeks only for something else to go wrong. Why would a change of angle sensor mess up the PAS pump?

Thanks

Another quick question to do with this. Could my problem be that I need to reset the codes after fitting the new angle sensor? I wasn't sure because it is a W Reg Fabia Classic, so I didn't think I would need to on that model. But now I'm wondering wether this is my problem.

But if it is, why would it have worked just fine for the last two weeks?

im no expert but i wouldn't have thought you need to reset after fitting a new sensor? it is very strange that it worked fine for 2 weeks then went again. are you sure it was fitted correctly - not that you cant fit it right first time ;) and is it still in the same place (not become loose)

with mine i had the ps light on and off with the steering keep feeling lighter then really heavy.. also the lights would flicker all the time which is the main reason i had to get it sorted because it was doing my head in!

also maybe check the fuse box it might have blown a fuse?

Good idea - i'll check the fuses later if I get time. Any one got any advice on how I know which fuse is the PAS one?

Although I am getting some assistance, just not enough at low speeds. Does this indicate that the fuse is ok? I'm wondering about the alternator. Just so strange (and annoying!) that it all worked ok for two weeks! I've checked all the connections and they are sound.

I don't know exactly how the speed sensor is designed, so this might be complete tosh, but maybe the speed sensor is FUBAR, and isn't telling the PAS when you're going slowly?

Maybe - it is original Skoda part and only three weeks old. But perhaps it has broke. I guess a diagnostic is the only way of telling?
