Possible problem

Featured Replies

I have just noticed a clicking sound when the car is idling, and after checking under the bonnet it seams to be coming from the belt side, but goes away when the engine in rev-ed, at the moment it is intermittent but could it be a problem with the belt tension-er

1.9 8v tdi pd

It could be the tensioner.

How old is the car and how many miles has it done. Also when was the belt last changed?

I'd get it into a garage, probably main dealer ASAP for diagnostics as it isn't worth chancing a cam belt unless you fancy buying a new engine.

Its a 55 plate with 67k, I informed the dealer when I had a full service at 64k but he did not hear it as it would not do it when there, I asked about changing the belt but they said it was an inspection at around 60K and a change at 80K.

when the clicking is there, it is the same sound that you got from using a lollipop stick in a bike wheel when pushing it

Go to another garage and get it done if they won't look at it. It's not going to be under warranty as you're over 60k.

The cambelt change includes a tensioner as part of the kit and so while you'd be doing it 13k early it's better to spend the £300 and have it done early that to wait a few months, and have the engine blow up on you. Just tell them you want it doing early and get the water pump changed at the same time. Should be an extra £25 and since it's drive by the cambelt it seems silly not to.
