Bad starting when hot

Featured Replies

Does anybody know why my 1.9 tdi has taken to being very difficult to start , when the engine is warm /hot ?, first thing in the morning, when cold, it almost beats me to the key !!could this be related to my duff MAF?, and of course go away when I fit the new one, I hope . Thanks Keep Smiling JOHN

engine temperature sensor - change it..

same problem on my car, got it changed £70 at skoda garage now all is good :)

Possibly although the MAF could cause it to be overfueling too.

I'd replace the MAF and if it's still a problem look at other options.

automatic choke not turning off.

same as you same problems i have had but i was told to bypass it by taking of the lead plug that goes into throttle for now and it works perfect just take it of to start it then put it back on when running.

worth having a look at the coolant temp sensor, always changing them at work (vw dealer) with the same problem.

Sounds like it to me also :)

Hi

Yes the CTS is a 4 pin one

2 of the pins go to the ECU for if you like controling the auto choke

So my money would be on that

£22.50 + VAT or not far off , 20 mins job to replace

Have a go yourself

We replace quite a few of these here too , very comon , that is why they was superceeded by VAG

automatic choke not turning off.

On TDi

where abouts is the temp sensor...anyone got a lovely pic...

What colour is it...grey ??

Mine has started doing this but the temp gauge is working perfectly. Could it still be the coolant temp sensor?

When the sensor on mine was playing up the temp gauge behaved completely normally.

Hi John

Yes sometimes it does , but not all the time

It is a 4 pin one

2 go to the ECU and 2 to the dash pod IIRC

I hope that helps?

Assuming it's in the same place on the TDI as the PD, it's down in the right/rear corner of the block, under the fuel pump. Bit hard to show, but:

I believe the old ones on the Octy are grey and the new ones are green. I've replaced them on both my wife's and mine in the last couple of years (different sensor on the Furby, but same problem...)

HI THERE ALL IN SKODALAND

Thanks for all the replys aiming me at the CTS, fraid that I fitted a new one and it has not made any differance ,sorry to say,no codes showing on the diag ,so, any ideas please, the garage and I are a bit lost .Thanks for your kind attentions. KEEP SMILING JOHN

I've heard people suggest the starter motor could also be at fault, as i have the same problem with my Octy II.

What does it do when hot ....any strange noises or just turning over again and agian without firing.

I have a hot start issue I took my starter apart at the weekend and regreased and gave it a clean but still waiting to see if its had a n effect.

Had a similar thing (hot starting) happen with a 90bhp 1.9 Tdi Octavia I owned. It ended up being a contact in the fuel relay.

The car actually cut out on me a couple of times as well when driving - fortunately not when i was on any major roads.

iirc - the symptoms were that the engine cut out (didn't splutter just died) and the battery light, oil light and glow plug lights all came on.

Hot starting the car would turn over fine but wouldn't catch - quite embarrassing in the petrol station.

Give it 2-3 minutes (to cool down??) and it would start as normal.

Had the relay changed and the problem went away

What does it start like when it is hot with the temperature sensor disconnected?

Not sure, cant quite get the idea where the temp sensor is from the piccy.

HI THERE FORD FAN

Thanks for the idea , not tried it yet , let you know as soon as I do , it certainly worked wonders when I disconnected the MAF for performance etc.
