Hi All,

I brought my car 3 months ago and within the last month everything seems to going wrong.

I have both the EPC and Engine light on. Whilst the car runs well once started, it seems thirsty and won't start first time (5/10 times). I work remotely and this makes me nervous.

On its last trip to the garage the mechanic cleaned the throttle valve & casing which was choked with oil and cleared all my error codes.

The engine management light has now returned and the mechanic is suggesting that i have a new EGR valve.

Essentially my query is whether the EGR valve can be responsible for the car failing to start on a regular basis (it does always start after 4 or 5 attempts). Once started the revs appear to flutter and then settle, this can happen at the start, middle or end of a journey with no continuity.

Having low funds for any repaire work i am worried that fixing the EGR valve will not sort out my starting problem.

The mechanic has indicated that the EGR alone will cost £137.

Any advice on this is extremely welcome

2001 is a Fabia I not the II

Back to topic I found what I was looking for in a prev thread

My Cousin has a Fabia 1.416v (2003 mdel)

Engine management light came on with the EPC light. Had the throttle valve cleaned and the computer reset but after nearly 2 weeks the fault light came back on.

actual fault was temperature sensor.

Now changed and the car is running better than ever and geting 40mpg+

Has the car had the piston rings changed, all your quirks point to this?

What are the fault codes?, I have known replacement temperature sensors to cure starting problems on these engines, even when the originals do not show a faut. They show implausible values when the engine warm up temperature readings are logged.

Where did you live?, as quite a few people on here could read your fault codes for you.
