Time for service - should I worry about remap?

Featured Replies

Hi,

my furby is due for 90 000 miles service, I was quoted £95 from steelers. I had the car remapped and remember that in some posts (which I cannot find) people said that steelers did something to ECU and remap was gone, oops.

I would not like to have the same thing happen to me. Should I be warried?

Thanks

Petr

I don't think they'd erase the map - the only issue is to do with the new car warranty. But at 90k, you're way past that anyway so don't sweat it!

They can accidentally remove a remap by flash programming your ECU which is done automatically sometimes when the VAS tester is plugged in. Not normally on a Fabia though, tends to be Octavia 2's and onwards.

 Presumably this is the ECU version of Windows Update rather than to revert the car to standard each time? Even so, could you make a claim against the dealer if this happened? I'd argue the tester isn't fit-for-purpose if that happens automatically without the option to abort...

It largely depends on how the machine is set up. If it is online as ours are now all the time when you plug in the machine it automatically scans for updates and TPL procedures before it starts diagnostics. The point being is if it picks up a fault code that VAG are aware of it will give you a TPL ref number to give you the diagnostics, if there is an update ready for that problem or there is an update anyhow it will then enter the update in the test plan before anything else can be done.

I guess the answer is they say dont remap your car, if the map gets overwritten its hardly their fault they are carrying out the service as per guidelines.

Its like any other company though. They release software updates for a reason and lets be brutally honest people that remap their cars are a small minority so you cant blame the dealers.

If your worried about it then id let the dealer know before you take it in. That way they can then tell you if its going to be a problem

A previous dealer I worked at had two tick boxes at the top of their job cards.

Is the vehicle modified

Yes

No

If you ticked yes they would make sure no updates were done, air filters weren't touched etc etc. And they knew where they stood with warranty.

If you ticked no then its your own fault.

Best thing to do. Then they could either warn you there could be a chance, or they could just not do the update.

As I always say... just talk to the dealer, there aren't scary horrible people like some people on here make out they are.

That's true - especially as it's out of warranty anyway, they'r eunlikely to kick up a stink!

thanks for replies, steelers tell me they do not do fault diagnostics as a part of service so I should not worry

I thought most tuning companies would reload a map if it got over-written by the dealers? it wouldn't suprise me if there was a token payment for this service but it wouldn't bother me.

lol, then they aint reading the service sheet. Wonder what else they miss?

yep, you were right, found it in Service Schedule book and it was confirmed by a different chap in the morning.

... got the car back after service, seems ok, only problem was they could not explain why they charged me for 5l oil when furby needs only 4.5 Went home, later on had a thought to check oil level and you guessed it - way above the max line.

Took it back to steelers, chaps did not even argue or measured the levels they just took the car to workshop, no appologies for my wasted time.... not sure what is it with these guys? The place wasn't exactly busy with customers. Do they not know how much oil to put in? I hope now they put the right variety in...not sure how to check that.

time to look for new place for service me think
