I've got a Fabia at the moment and although it's a great little car - it is a squeeze as a family motor.

I really need to get a second car and either a Superb or a Passat are what I'm looking at.

I've seen the 'Edition 100' whilst browsing this forum and this looks like the one for me, I'd go for the PD130 I think.

Just got some simple questions about the car (having never been in one yet ).

Ok, does it fit well as a family runner?

I'm assuming it's an executive smooth ride kind of car?

How much bigger is it than an Octavia?

Will it fit easily in a modern garage?

Is the Edition 100 worth the extra over a standard car or even a Highline Passat?

PD 130 is the best of the bunch - go for manual 5 speed.

Base models are better value than "parts bin specials" - cruise control is the only thing really lacking on a base Superb and it's cheap to retrofit and works well.

Family runner - good legroom and seatbelts. Make sure you get folding rear seats (MY '05>). Boot entry (access) hole is too small to be useful. You can't get anything big in there.

Reasonable ride (poor ground clearance) but lousy handling - nose heavy.

Check Octavia figures.

Check your garage size. The Superb is a long car and can be a sod to park. Don't buy one if you need a town car.

Depreciation on old Superbs is set to be steep as the recession bites and the new model comes on stream. If it's what you need, buy the best diesel base model you can find and run it into the ground. Pattern spares and diagnostic software make this easy to do. Avoid dealers at all costs - find a good independent or do it yourself. Remember absolutely to put the right oil in PD engines.

To a degree, motorway absolutely, town it's bouncy

Lots

Not sure, mine does, but the garage isn't a bovis homes one.

Yes especially if you choose a 100 or elegance model.

you have to take into account that the Superb will cost more to run and mantain,parts are more epensive and since not many were sold in UK unlike an Octavia and Fabia,second hand parts maybe harder to get by.Also the styling of the car looks dated now,I don't like very much the Superb's looks,looks too much like a Passat...If I were you I'do go for a 2002/2003 Octavia wagon or Fabia combi.Both should be great value and the Octavia's got an enormous squarish boot.

Mechanical parts for the Superb are no problem at all - stretched Passat in drag. Some body and trim parts could well be difficult in future though. eBay is littered with Passat bits.

The 1.9 PD diesel is essentially the same engine as is fitted to the Octavia and gives similar economy as long as fierce acceleration is avoided. Steady state, as the Superb is a better shape than the Octavia estate it should give slightly better economy. It's a great motorway cruiser. Just avoid bends...

If you have a job which suits the Superb, you will get a better used one for the same money than you would an Octavia.

Only my opinion, but I think the Superb is going to be like a BMW 7 from the 80's i.e still look good 15 yrs on.

nah...you think so'.Octy 2 ain't got a grandad image,in my opinion it's the best car to pick from all the Skoda range at the moment.It's got timeless design and feels like a very good solid 3 series beemer.

I'm not knocking the car for what it is mate, I just don't think it's much of a looker *Scout* apart.

TBH we use ours as a family car.

I've got a Vrs and my wife has the superb.

If we go on hols or long trips the superb is fantastic. Very comfortable ride and On a recent blat to scotland at motorway speeds it did 50MPG there and back.

We've fitted 18" alloys and an LCR splitter and once shreds has the cash she wants to lower it a bit.

You get alot of toys and as ours is the PD130 it is quite quick for it's size.

On the whole for the money they are great value and much better than the passat. Rear legroom is awesome!

The edition 100 is great and for the extra money well worth it.

From the point of the Octy I think the rear legroom is not fantastic (especially in comparison to the superb. The legroom is great if to keep the kids quiet you join them in the back!

The boot is quite a decent size, I have a 03 plate without folding rear seats and have no problem getting my fiancees nans wheelchair in and out on a regular basis?

As for dimensions, The Superb is longer than an Oct'y,

personally id go for the facelift model superb......has all the toys and although ive fitted a single din size blaupunkt rome sat nav...along with the standard white instrumentation and the fact the sat nav can play mp3's as well whilst navigating...the interior lit up at night is quite something.....either way which ever model you go for....you wont be dissapointed

I love my Superb, but no folding seats can be a problem when you back up to the Ikea loading bay...

Otherwise, just come back from a 1,000 mile trip to Holland and Brussels, 52.8 mpg with a 130bhp 1.9 tdi on an 03 plate, 109,000 miles.

Trip back from Fort William got 52.4mpg.

Lovely car - I was buying a house and had to make sure the car fitted in the garage.

Some houses I turned down on that Basis (an other points as well). (I have 18 cm spare at the back (enough for a tow bar me thinks.))

Everyone who rides in the back loves the leg room.

If - there is one If - I had enough money - I would buy a a Skoda with fold down rear seats - but that is the only grumble!

Still, I'm not sure - I've not seen him about the Superb forum but he has been posting.
