4 speed auto gearbox lifespan

Featured Replies

Driving a 2.0L SLX Octavia since mid 2000. Done 110+k km so far.

Anyone has any idea / experience what's the normal lifespan of the 4 speed auto transmission in my car?

Thanks!

Hello zm2 and welcome to Briskoda

There aren't many of us driving cars with automatic transmission. I think mine might be one of the older ones - it was bought in May 2001 - but it has done less than 34000 miles (around 54000km).

The 4-speed transmission seems to be strong; it manages the power from a tuned 1.8T engine (226BHP, 168kW) without any problems.

I hope to clock up a lot more miles before it needs any major work.

Hi!

I drive a 1.8T auto as well, am based in Singapore.

Do you have any idea if the gearbox will be able to withstand a ko4 upgrade? :D

toying with the idea... might just get a stage1 chip instead... Any recommendations?

IIRC the K04 upgrade will give around 260BHP and a lot of torque. This is much more than my engine produces (around 225BHP - I have no idea about the torque since the transmission kept shifting on the rolling road, and confused the dyno computer). You might be lucky, but I wouldn't risk it.

It might be an idea to ask the question on one of the American VW forums; the auto transmission is the same 4-speed unit as fitted to a lot of VW golfs, and I'm sure that the Americans have more experience of tuning cars with auto boxes.

Have the VW Transporter vans, all with the 4 speed auto box and 2.5TDI (102HP) lumps, and 3 out of 4 vans needed multiple boxes, as they didnt shift, locked up, or just went crazy. As they are an electronic type box its a complete swap..no messing. The 4 th van still has its original box as the driver is steadier and doesnt "use the horses" as much.

Therefore my opinion on them is that they are great with gentle/normal loads, but give them some hard work and they dont like it. I would therefore be very careful before putting too huge a torque load through them.

Thanks for the replies guys... think I should just stick to a stage 1 chip if that's the case :P
