Saw a VW Scirocco today!

Featured Replies

I was booking my Passat into Western VW in Gorgi (Edinburgh) and they were taking delivery of a 58 plate white Scirocco.

The pictures in the papers and on the television really don't do it justice.

Absolutely stunning especially from the rear 3/4 and in white made all the curves jump out!

"Looks like the Stig's helmet"

Does look a nice car, but bet they become very common indeed.

I guess you mean the one on his head or have you seen inside his racing suit?:rofl:

The pricing will take everyone away from the Golf GTI and will mean that most GTIs will be 5 doors. TopGear said they are only about £150 more but with more kit, it would be silly to buy a 3 door GTI.

Hmmmmmmmmmm :rubchin: Visit to local VW show room in order methinks ;)

I should be having a test drive this week :)

What new Scirocco? It just looks like a Golf to me!

Read about this in Performance VW and it looks a cracking car in white.

I had the test drive today! :D

First impressions:

A silver (blugh!) Scirocco GT 2.0TSI DSG...

Silver isn't the car's best colour, I'll say that. But it looks nice enough. It needs a better colour to show off the curves more. Silver just looks bland on it.

However, it does "lean" forward slightly, which gives it an impressive, muscular stance. The frame-less doors are nice, although when you take the key out they drop the windows slightly, which could let heavy rain in.

Snug (but not claustrophobic) inside, supportive seats, nigh-on perfect steering wheel. The new touch-screen radio is brilliant - and standard - and the Maxidot/Highline display works well with the wheel-mounted controls. There seems to be space in the back for real people (Audi take note!).

So start her up, and the exhaust gives a nice burble... unlike the Octavia, Leon or the Golf! It took a while to find the button on the DSG gear knob (it's round the back), but once found easily slipped it into D and lowered the hand brake.

Took it easily the first few hundred meters, exhaust gently burbling away. Then I came to an open stretch and buried the throttle!

My god this car is quick! Feels a lot quicker than the Octavia and the Golf, maybe even the Leon Cupra! Most of this is down to the DSG - the acceleration is just relentless! - with the rest made up by the suspension. The DSG box is superb in this car, suits the engine really well and is not too urgent to change down, instead it relies moreso on the torque of the engine, which is very good. Shifts with the paddles are very swiftly and seamlessly executed, up or down the box. I only caught it out one, accelerating hard, then changing down caused a brief pause and a little shunt.

The GT model has adaptive suspension, and I drove it mostly in Sport setting, which is hard but not uncomfortable. It coped better with the road than my Octavia anyway. In Comfort it was compliant with a little more body roll noticeable. To be honest, I'd leave it in Sport all the time.

Surprisingly good brakes, too, with a lot less dead-travel at the top of the pedal. Which as we all know is something that VAG cars have in common!

On a run, sat in D, with the suspension in Comfort it was perfectly comfortable and composed, albeit with a slight tyre roar - probably down to the tyres themselves rather than any problem with the car per se.

In D (or R for that matter) the car doesn't want to run away, which is something I've noticed in a few automatics. It makes reversing into a space much easier! And the rear visibility is surprisingly decent, the wide side mirrors helping a lot. PDC might be an idea for some people though.

It's a quite compact car, considering the internal space. The boot, while having a small opening is very large and deep-set, much like the originals. Perfectly adequate for two cases I'd say!

All-in-all, a very quick, sporty, spacious, comfortable and stylish car. And for less than £200 more than the equivalent Golf... why would you choose the hatch?

HTH :)

Interesting read, thanks. Is there still a bit of creep as you let go of the brakes, or do you have to give it some gas to move?

It appears to hold, rather than creep, if you get me?

Right, so if the road was perfectly level, it might *just* move?

The creep in most autos is something you get used to after a while.

Quite possibly!

The creep - especially in reverse - always throws me!

With DSG, when you remove your foot from the brake it takes a second for the clutch to engage, then it will creep forward (or back). You can then start braking again and the clutch won't disengage until you come to a full stop. Thats what I find in my car anyway.

Good review - can't wait to see one in the flesh - I think my local VW place are launching on Thursday.

I must testdrive one...

Not with the auto hold on the VW models now as they apply the brakes whilst staionary.

Also it may well feel quicker that the Octavia TFSi and the Golf GTi as its a new engine, pretty different now.

I think the new Ibiza has that too, on some models.

I thought auto hold was just on hills - mine has this and if it's on then when I release the brake the car will releass the brake and move after a few seconds, or release as soon as I apply the gas. How would auto hold work when on the flat then as either you have your foot on the brake or you are in N with the hand

brake on?

PDI'd the first one last week at the garage.

Took it out for a spin.

Just another MK5 GTI in different clothes.

I may just be biast here, as i work on them every day, i thikn VW's are all going down the same road and are quite boring.

There all basically the same nowadays.

It does look nice, but its just another VW to me.

But the MK1 & 2 Sciroccos were just MK1 Golf in different clothes....

I've been out in one; cracking car and looks the nuts in the right colour.
